Egos aside, what's it actually like working at Boston Consulting Group ? Everyone likes to say it's 16 hour days but is that constant? Do you stop for dinner and then go back to work after? Are people reasonable when you're ill or do they work you like a dog?

I like my cushy job but would be willing to work harder at a better firm, but not if it means driving myself into the ground and giving up anything outside of work

Have worked here for three years and it’s not like this at all - my average hours are probably more like 9 until 7/8 with one later night every 1-2 weeks. Teams are very respectful of personal commitments and you can easily protect evenings. I’ve not worked on a weekend.

Some teams like PIPE (our PE team) are consistently longer hours. Like much in consulting, you can feel burned by a single bad project, but vs. some of the regular hours and extremes I hear from friends elsewhere, BCG compares pretty well.

7-8pm is not that difficult if you just get through your work, and then finish for the day

Most people I know that finish 9-10pm take two hours for dinner or other activities in the early evening, give or take

Also depends on cases as I said above, but I generally have worked across consumer, TMT and ops, and I’ve avoided cases with a bad reputation for WLB

3 years at BCG as well. Typically work from 8:30-5:30, break from 530-700, then back 7 to 10:30. Pretty consistent 60 hour weeks, sometimes spike up to 70+, sometimes slow down to 40

Got it! Thanks for sharing

Similar to above, my hours so far have been reasonable. Not a 9 to 5, but I mostly work 9 to 8. Sometimes I finish earlier, sometimes later depends on the case and the week. People respect sick days, training time and holidays though so I’ve never had any issues with those. Overall, great culture and wonderful people. I really like working here and would definitely recommend if you’re looking to make the switch

@bcg 3 - really helpful. Thank you. would be keen to hear more. Interviewing for a role in healthcare PA & would love to hear your thoughts. DM if you’re keen for a chat

Work hard, play hard. Some days require long nights, but when you are not working and with your team, you are out at some nice fancy dinner or event

To be honest Big4 wlb is not that great as well for half the pay. Hence it's worth aspiring for.

like

Not 16 hour days but probably 12-14 hour days

like

Very case dependent but for me 12 hour days are a mon-thu average…but the pay is top of market and the work typically is more impactful than others I worked at. We have 24 yr olds on >£100k in the U.K., far more in the US and Middle East... Comes at a wlb trade off though admittedly.

My firm recently moved me to a new practice area. The partner who I have worked with for quite some time does not have enough work, and she does not want to be in a supervisory, teaching role. The firm moved me without having a real conversation, and the practice areas are like night and day. On one hand, I am extremely grateful to have a job. However, I am afraid that this jump could stunt my career since the new area has few exit opportunities. Any thoughts on how to proceed? Leave my firm?
