Thanks for the insight Thanos
Came here looking for Thanos. Have to admit the guy has a point…
So there are actually draw backs to lowering population. One is that our social and economic systems were built on the assumption that there would always population grow. Look at the numerous issues Japan is facing because of lowering population. As well, younger people are going increasing to be squeezed because their shrinking labor pool will be responsible for taking care of older and larger population pools. Not saying lowering population isn't necessary or an eventually going to happen. Just not all upside and we as a society will need to address some issues.
I believe issues from decreased population is why China finally revoked its one child policy.
Overpopulation is a myth
Folks - even climate and eco friendly technologies have an impact on the planet. Harvesting the lithium for car batteries leaves ecosystems destroyed. I agree that we can do a lot, and one of those things is to stop growing.
Musk is a tool. A big one. He's a visionary in the creative, scientific way that high functioning autistic people are but he has no sense on how most basic human interactions work.
I cringe when he gives speeches….he’s so bad. I cringe even more when people explain how great he was the next day…

As we near 8 billion people, the reality is that world would be better with far fewer people.
The planet has gone from 1.7 billion people to nearly 8 billion in a century and it’s unsustainable for resources and an environmental perspective.

There is also a natural drop in the birth rate as women are educated and developing and Frontier economies mature.
A decline there is good, but in developed countries a birthrate under 2.1 requires significant immigration or it declines, especially as life expectancy grows ever longer.
Japan suffers because it has declining proportion of working age people while also restricting women in the work force and close to banning productive immigration.
Musk is much like Henry Ford. Creative and production genius with horrific ideas about social issues. As Ford was to Nazi Germany, Musk is to China.
Most of the overpopulation ideology is based out of a fabricated study done in the 50s

Love that you know about this!! Seriously.
In his biography he talks about how smart ppl have a duty to reproduce so that each generation gets smarter. That's why he has 5 or 6 kids. So go have them babies, you smart ppl.
Maybe the issue… is that some of the people having lots children shouldn’t be having children… I say some. Not all. Some.

A whole lot of economic and policy decisions rely on the assumption of continued growth.
The status quo is probably unsustainable, but very few people are incentivized to think long term, so we’re unlikely to approach this problem in a thoughtful and coordinated manner.
He means white children
Is this a joke?
I thought over population was the reason behind covid 19 - Elon better have a sit down with Bill Gates & Tony “I represent science’
When the water wars of 2040 get rolling, we’ll be wishing for a couple less billion people fighting for resources
How much water is used to host fishbowl? Data centers use more water than midsize towns.
None of the problems you listed are due to having too many people and all of them can be solved by having more, educated, and productive people. The one child policy in China did reduce population growth but was a disaster of a policy, which is why the CCP has shifted gears.
Also “fewer people = less carbon so let’s reduce people” is not only overly simplistic and misleading, it’s also an incredibly dangerous idea.
SA3 yes, carrying capacity is the other side of the curve. You were describing the level after which more population is generally unsustainable for ecosystems. That’s carrying capacity. MVP is the level under which population converges to 0—not the relevant concept here.
We have environmental issues, such as waste, pollution, GHG emissions, etc. That’s not the same as a population constraint. Potable water is only a constraint in some parts of the world (so not an overall population constraint), and my whole point is that humans can expand those constraints.
And are you really advocating for shifting the world’s population toward poverty to minimize resource consumption and waste production? Any argument that reaches the conclusion that “people overall should be poorer” should be impetus for rethinking your framing.
Cargill has forecasted that the planet needs to produce as much food the next 40 years as the past 8000 years combined to feed everyone. Think about that!
Totally agree!
I heard a statistic the other day saying that the number of single person households has increased in recent years by 7xs since the 1960s. That in and of itself contributes to the problem I believe. We have to build more houses/apartments to hold the single households, each person is driving their own car/riding solo, etc. whereas many of these things would be shared in cohabitating or married households
Not the car part for sure!
He is correct. US is at a 1.7 child per household average reproduction rate per family. I believe a 2 child per household average is needed to be considered at or above. With that said, the questionable ideas about a one child policy and “keep the population low to reduce carbon footprint” are pretty paganistic.
C1 what?

It’s true because the global economic model is a giant pyramid scheme. You need a steady input of people at the bottom to help the people at the top get richer. If there are less people at the bottom, you actually have to start paying them more.
I think the argument has merit. For example, what happens when the Colorado river runs out of water? Phx/ salt lake/la/ Denver Are all dependent on that water..,,
Chief
Who is missing that fact? Commercial users can pay for it. Just as we can ensure everybody gets a modest amount of water, we can ensure everybody gets enough food. It's not that scarce and it's not going to be that scarce. As long as there is means to provide the necessities, let the market decide what we do with the excess.
Maybe the price of almond milk will increase 10X. Fine.
There's definitely work to be done to transform how we manage water rights. Our current system isn't working and it's only going to get worse.
Have you not watched the intro to the documentary Idiocracy? It's not really overpopulation as much as the quality of the gene pool.

Idk if it’s true but I’ve heard that unintelligent people tend to reproduce more than intelligent people. Maybe that’s the reason civilization will collapse.
