Open an IRA. Roth or Traditional. Just do the research to determine what you think if best given your situation and future.

Contribute to 401K to the max match limit (6% or whatever for D). Then max the Roth, then max the rest of the 401K if you can still afford to live on what is leftover.

Maxed to the matching percentage we get.

Skip the bonds. You'll get bonds as part of most mutual funds. Also if your young look for growth

Second P1, skip bonds if you won't need these funds soon (assume you won't because you have an emergency fund). Look for long term investments!

Max 401k for match. Then max 401k or Roth, depending on your belief about future tax rates and your desire for later tax diversity. No objectively right answer, but you should understand the difference.

I second wealthfront. The first 10k you invest is free, and if you take someone's referral (and subsequently refer people) you get to invest an additional 5k

D3, why wealthfront over other services

Alrighty who wants to give me a referral then?

Just thinking of this does my head in. I'm a European living in London, UK planning on living in the US shortly who will want to retire in Europe eventually, closing the circle. I'm now contributing to my pension in the UK, which can be easily moved to Europe. But what's the deal if I go to the US? Can I move my savings into a 401k and then eventually all that into a European pension scheme?

How do I get the best of this without losing money or committing a crime?
