Does FIRE require you to live on a mattress and share a room with 3 people while eating ramen noodles everyday or am I OK to spend on basic comforts and delay retirement by Iike a year? Just wanted to put it out there that no one is perfect. I'm going on 13 years with my significant other. I'm 25 years old. While our story isn't the typical one, we've had two breaks in between. Anyone returning to work tomorrow before the new year?

If I go away for the weekend but am still available to work remotely, do I have to let my team know? Pre-covid?

I know the answer is “it takes however long it takes” but what do you think is a reasonable ballpark for how long (in terms of billed hours) an appellate brief should take. Assume you’ve already won at the intermediate appeals level and are mostly retooling the brief from the court below.

Does anyone have any experience transitioning to a different practice area, specifically from tax to T&E? I’m a 4th yr associate trying to make this change and finding it a bit challenging. Went out for a 30 min quick lunch. Didn’t check my phone per my therapist and focused on getting lunch. When I’m back, got 50 emails which include a partner asked me to do something I didn’t respond in 20 mins and he did it himself.

Why can’t people just wait for 30 min. Are we not even deserved time for a lunch?

My firm pays for associate’s bar exam fees. We had to sign something stating that we will stay at the firm for one year, and if we don’t, we have to pay them back. I have an offer at another firm. Do you think it’s acceptable to ask that firm to pay the bar exam fees I will owe my old firm?

Are the partners that you interview with during a lateral callback generally the ones you’ll end up working with? There were a few partners I would have liked to interview with but didn’t get to and I wonder if that means they weren’t interested or don’t have a need.

I’m a first year and fucked up big time. The client doesn’t know about this but a senior associate was furious. I know it’s 100% my fault but no one above me actually reviewed my work bc everyone was so busy. But then I found out the senior gave a rant about how I fucked up to another colleague. When I apologized to him, he was really salty. Since then, my heart drops every time I see his email bc I’m too scared. He is usually pretty emotional and his instructions are vague, which doesn’t help.

How do you not feel guilty when protecting your work-life balance? I am annualizing about 200 hours over my billable requirement and accept new work when asked 99% of the time, but yet I feel guilty leaving the office at 4pm to do family stuff after billing a full day and being on track for all of my projects. Please help.

Tips for bankruptcy associates who eventually want to move in-house? 3rd year associate in bankruptcy/restructuring group doing mainly bk lit but a few deals too. Need to stay in BL for at least another year for the money, but eventually want to move in-house. The path to in-house seems more straightforward for general commercial lit or more standard transactional practices. Any tips for someone who’s practice is a bit of a hybrid (and who will never likely do discovery or handle a depo)

Are partner promotion votes generally unanimous? Like if you pissed off some random partner in a different office or practice on something not so major and they hold a grudge, and they vote against you, how does that usually work? Assuming of course you had the support of the partners in your own group. I know this is firm dependent to an extent.
