Ending this belief in our unerring exceptionalism might actually be the thing that saves us. There’s a lot we can learn from the success of other countries (be in healthcare, education, infrastructure investment), but for a long time we turned a blind eye to it because “we are the best”. Countries like Germany, which don’t endlessly praise their own history, have been liberated from the constraints of the past and have been able to make far healthier societies.
