Enough to concentrate on analytics at MBA? Or should I do a bootcamp

I’m a Data Scientist that hires Data Scientists. We haven’t found an analytics MBA that’s met the criteria to be a Data Modeler, our junior Data Science Position, let alone Data Scientist. You’re just not going to get enough education with either of those options to be a Data Scientist if that’s your goal. MBA programs focus on intermediate understanding of stats and time series models. Boot camps are great for the technology understanding. But to be a Data Scientist you need to be familiar with the technology and deeply mathematically literate as well.

Hahahaha..... wait are you serious? Ive never heard of an MBA with an actionable analytics piece. Most bootcamps are focused on web development not analytics and they are going out of business so certification from one of them will be useless if you want a rubber stamp. What’s your current background and what do you actually want to be able to do?

K1 are you in Lighthouse? What's the background for a modeler? Went to interview for engineering, but was thought by the team more like a modeler, then rejected. Couldn't get a good grasp on what modelers do and their background

K1 i completely agree. I gradually learned analytics and data science over my career because of the subject matter of my projects. Now work for a data science consulting and training shop. All of my employees either are masters in a very technical area with industry expertise or very smart folks that learned through a combination of online classes, books, and their own initiative. We are iteratively developing a data science curriculum from intro programming through various neural net topics, but we’ve found the quality of education options have a huge range in quality and most don’t go deep enough to actually apply concepts effectively on the job without being dishonest.

Drexel offers a business analytics MS, wondering how much of a difference that makes in comparison to a more general MBA program

I’ve looked into the programs (not Drexel in particular) and the business analytics masters seem like they would be a really expensive way to get introduction to basic analytics (i..e. Using sql or creating a dashboard in tableau. Probably better off making a lateral move and picking up those skills on projects. Since i’m in the education business now too, ill tell you that those programs are basically a marketing ploy to play off of buzz words and make money for the colleges. They aren’t rigorous typically.

I’ve heard good things from my colleague in the Georgia Tech Masters of Analytics, and he’s an engineering graduate himself

C1- Yes, I work for Lighthouse. I went to the Berkeley Masters in Data Science program. If you’re considered a Data Modeler- that’s high praise- other organizations would probably consider you a data scientist. We have very high hiring standards in the Lighthouse . I’d expect you to have experience applying a large array of statistical and ML models for research and experience for maintaining the models in deployment. I’d expect you to be able to explain key assumptions in almost any model and the hyper-parameters. If I put a problem in front of you I’d expect you to be able to solve it, explain it for variance and bias, break it down into its theoretical parts. If you’re a Modeler, you should be able to explain all things models in and out and have a portfolio of models you already put into production.

AC1 - 10 minute review- The Drexel Program seems to have a weak technology focus, but covers good content in Ops Research and has great potential in some concentrations to be more mathematically inclined. Look into the modeling concentration to become more mathematically literate. No deep learning, no AI, no big database, no problem solving at scale, no course on how to separate causation from correlation. You would learn to model- but might not learn how to implement in a big setting. I’d get answers to those questions, note I only spent 10 mins cruising through course descriptions

D1 - Georgia Tech has a great online computer science program specializing in analytics too! 👍

KPMG1 - would you suggest the Masters of Science in Analytics, or the Masters of Science in Com Sci (machine learning focus). My colleague is doing the former, but I’m looking into both myself

D1- ~ 3 or 4 of my coworkers are in the Online Comp Sci degree degree for ML right now. I know it’s a good one; they backtest some cool algorithmic trading ideas in the classes. Those coworkers work on financial service clients now. On the analytics program and it seems promising too, Operations Research is definitely the right course work for applied business modeling and the specialization in technical data engineering ideas is super valuable. I would make sure you’re getting exposed to the common tools for tying all these ideas together- in Python and R and SQL and that it’s not just 1 class of each. It’s Not enough to model things theoretically, you also gotta be able to do it (and doing it makes theory easier to learn). This Shouldn’t be a strong deciding factor- but if in 15 years, the analytics buzzword blows over, are you going to be left with a computer science degree or a degree in a buzzword. And maybe it doesn’t matter at all bc you’ll get so much experience in consulting.
