Estimate of how much time and how much money a production company/director spends on a director’s treatment for a triple bid?

@sapientrazorfish 1 - I beg to differ. Not sure where you were working that this is your take away....Bidding producer $800 - $1200 per day (think about how many times agencies ask for revisions on bids) - director writes thoughts / pulls images / copy writer builds it out / art director pulls together deck / agency asks for revisions. One week goes by and 5k in cash is down the drain and director spent 4 days of his / her life on it aprox they won’t get back as their time is unpaid. If you keep bidding the same few top directors at the same top production shops just so your creatives can say they worked with so and so and get their fancy lion and offer them sub par scripts for sub par budgets - they may phone it in. For the rest of the directors on the rosters, especially at the smaller shops - there is a ton of care put into these by everyone involved - and that should be treated with care and consideration. Especially if you have experience and have worked on both sides, you should be aware of the negative impact trivializing director’s and production companies’ efforts can have on the industry. No one should ask for free work from anyone and then treat that gesture lightly.

Sapientrazorfish for the win on being clueless. It’s what every agency THINKS happens

I enjoy reading directors treatments because there is almost always a great deal of care and effort in them. Frankly, never even seen a half assed one. They may have help but someone is sure trying their damndest

like

We bid Mark Romanek on a campaign. By the time he was done presenting the treatment, everyone on the phone was convinced it was the first time he’d seen it

likefunny

10 hours, 3k for plain live action. Way more for animation/fx/combo. It’s why we have nightmares about just being the third bidder because they need a third bidder....

☝️100%.

EXACTLY @PD1 👏👏👏👏👏

At least 20 hours if not more depending on scope, challenges, vision, how collaborative the agency is, etc. We have spent more than a week or so in a few that we were excited about the project and creative vision

like

They usually hire some kid to copy and paste those with some minor flourish from the director.

Damn straight PD1

like

@EP1 been at this for a while. I know first hand from several prod shops that some, not all, pull this dip shit move. I’d like to think that some of these directors actually care...

funny

No effing way busy working directors have the time to put together and write 30 page treatments when they take their briefing calls while on other jobs and work 20 hours a day. They have help!!

like

Depends on the director, depends on the shop. I’ve worked on both sides and ultimately, a director will decide how invested he or she is in writing a treatment And that investment will be dependent on rate, quality of boards, and value of the relationship.

like

That being said, expect most shops on average to spend two days of a writer and two days layout. Many will be in house designers/writer. But out of house, factor about $90/hour for each. I’d average 18-25 for each.

like

Really depends on the director and internal support structure. 4 full days and about 3k is about right. It can be $0 - 15k to be honest... A lot has to do with internal setup and experience
SR user yes people mail it in but probably with predictable results.

like

Depends on the treatment and the turn around but average I say $3k and about 15-20 hours if it’s rush job add another $1k.

like

Here’s what mostly happens. (Exceptions of course)

- Treatment Developer, hired by production company, eavesdrops on all calls with agency.

- Director and TD discuss at length, after call, what the vision is.

- TD presents draft to Director. Edits are made. Vision is still Directors, they’re just not writing it.

- Production company shows agency. If there are key things that need changing, edits are made.

- Agency presents treatment to client with reccos.

Treatment Developers get paid some decent money as they are pivotal to landing jobs.

There’s no cut and paste template but some will borrow from old treatments regarding camera and color techniques so that’s no big deal.
