Even though we’re working 100% remotely, my manager is against the idea of us working outside the country without letting her know. Rebel that I am, I packed my stuff and booked two months in Europe. I was a bit scared I wouldn’t be able to connect to the vpn but two weeks in now and I’m enjoying life! Anyone with a similar story?

Rebel about to find themselves unemployed and with a tax fraud case. Good luck king.

People absolutely do get caught doing this. I know people who have had their company property wiped after being out of country too long and then given warnings/let go for violations.

likefunny

It being legal and you getting caught are two different things. It is not legal, there are tax consequences. Doesn’t matter if you’re a permanent resident. However, chances of getting caught aren’t high. You’re naive to think they can’t track you from your VPN though.

I’m not a tax expert in your state, or in the country you are working in. But typically you are responsible for paying tax in the country you’re working based on those rules, unless you have a work visa. You could be on the hook for double taxation, because your state may require you to pay tax on that same income, unless the two jurisdictions have a tax treaty.

You guys are just jumping to conclusions and just throwing words around. Chill. I think the people talking about tax and data implications are the same people that’ve never left the country. I’m pretty sure tax implications apply IF I decide to LIVE there. I’ll take my chances, thanks!

funnylike

Each country has a different minimum days of presence before you trigger tax obligations. Frequently it’s 30 days,,, but some are more some are less. Not only could you trigger a tax obligation for you personally, depending on your activities you could also trigger a tax obligation for the company you work for.

likefunny

For most countries, if you’re there less than 6 months you could claim treaty relief and there would not be personal tax implications. Don’t listen to the fear-mongers.

Different on the corporate side but that’s not your problem

like

OP Pretty sure VP means the country you’ve been in for 2 weeks and are working from and may not have a work visa for lol… I’d hold off on calling people ignorant since you didn’t even know the implications of you just peacing out of the country to work retime

In my almost decade of working I’ve seen this to be more or a Big4 issue than general corporate America. Every industry company I’ve worked at (all global conglomerates) never batted an eye when I asked to work abroad for weeks or months at a time. Now, post pandemic, companies are starting to crackdown because they want their employees in the office and they think they’re out having fun abroad instead of working/being efficient. It seems to be more of an optics issue rather than actual tax implications. Also, most people aren’t going to hit the threshold to trigger tax implications with their stints abroad so it’s mostly fear mongering tbh.

Lots of fear mongering

From one HR person to another - you’re in big doodoo. I’d start looking for another job if I was you

likefunny

I encourage people to do this specifically because it’s frowned upon. Screw HR. I’m gonna do what I want and they aren’t going to stop me. We need to stop treating employers like they control our lives. We control them.

Not saying I’m an expert because I do advisory work but there are tax experts here considering how many big 4 people responded.

Tax implications? I’ve done something similar for about a year (travelled to different countries while working remotely) and didn’t get any notice or “tax” issues. My company knows I live in California and pay my taxes there, but my boss is cool with me traveling. I don’t think you should have an issue OP unless you self report or actually reside in Europe. Then you’re subjected to their laws.

like

Wrong wrong wrong

I live in Europe and i know quite a lot of people who live in one county and work in another. WFH has made this difficult because of the tax implications but they already pay taxes in both countries I think (not exactly sure about the setup but some countries might not have tax treaties with others for this). Our company has a policy of working from outside your country for max 3 weeks/year. While they don't always check, it is still illegal to do this. I would recommend you check with a tax lawyer if you wanna keep working like this because im not sure what the consequences of this are since technically you'll be committing fraud in two different countries if you do this for more than a month

Did you once think that there was a reason why she would like to know?

Honestly guys, with our current climate and most companies working on a remote schedule, do you not think that there would be guidelines or policies rolled out by the ‘IRS’ or our own companies? I’m sure they would think it would be a big deal if there were data and tax consequences no?

The irs has thought of this many years before this. Working at a big 4 when I had a long project over 4 months in another state I had to pay taxes in both states and the firm helped fix the difference in tax. It’s less the IRS I would be worried about and the European counties that want a part of your income for living there. I think we are all just say be cautious and do some research to see. Doing a quick look it seems if you spend less than six months in that country that country will not expect you to pay tax, if longer then you will have to pay tax.

I'm feeling a lot of anger towards my manager (now he's acting normal but there were moments where he was condescending/dismissive/mocked my and others work/arrogant/said stuff was "wrong" constantly/belittling the difficulty of tasks etc. in the past project).
Maybe it is "standard chewing out" but it bothered me a lot. So much that I find myself still getting all fired up inside thinking about it...
Idk how to let go of this :/ Thoughts?

If we have to do a comparison here, I think I am still the better one, right?

My confession is that as a young guy, I want us to go back to the office so I can meet driven, career minded, attractive women. So tired of being catfished and all the other BS on dating apps.

Edit: to clarify, I don't mean hitting on women at work. I would just like to meet quality women, and I don't go partying or to bars. It's very hard as someone in their 20s coming out of a pandemic to meet people.
