Been wanting to get myself a luxury car ever since graduating from UG. I’m 5.5 years out now and think I’m ready to pull the trigger. Which would you get / recommend: new Model 3, used BMW 4/5Series or used Mercedes C-Class? Aiming to stick to $40-$50K.

Highly recommend leasing a Tesla. I’ve owned a Land Rover LR3, Mercedes’ E550, BMW X3 and an Audi A4. The Tesla model Y has been by far the most fun to drive, and truly futuristic feeling of the bunch. The Tesla is not nearly as plushy as the others, but it really feels like the future. And with the home charging set up you always wake up with a full “tank” every morning. Can’t beat 4.2 0-60, B&O stereo and tons of cargo and leg room, and full driver safety (auto pilot) for $50ish thousand. But that’s said buy don’t lease, EV’s are making leaps in innovation.

That being said if you don’t care about the above and want true comfort. Buy a used Mercedes. Way more comfortable, but less fun to drive and going to be harder to find all the above packages on it for a good price

If you want comfy just get a Lexus… it’s comfy and reliable which can’t be said for Benz

Posts like this crack me up! Here's a MUCH smarter solution: Buy yourself a nice Chevy or Toyota - a fraction of the cost, and it will get you from point A to point B exactly the same as these overpriced cars you are considering. Personally, I could not care less about what other people think about the car I drive. And I don't need to prove a "status" to anyone. At the end of the day, nobody remembers what you drive, much less cares! I receive MUCH more gratification saving all of that money, and investing it toward a comfortable retirement. Few purchases in life are a greater waste of money (in terms of a highly depreciable asset) than a car - particularly "luxury" cars that do nothing other than enable you to say "I drive a BMW, or I drive a Mercedes". To me, it simply says "another fool with no fiscal discipline". Just my .02.

P1, I might keep my car if I have the room for it, but I really like my GFs RAV4 and would be perfectly happy with that as a daily driver.

I don't think I would be happy at all having kids throw up, drop snacks, or spill things in a $50k+ vehicle.

“Luxury”

@EY13 - To me that’s a different segment. The way I and several auto experts view segments is the following:

- Mainstream (Honda, Toyota etc),
- Luxury (Mercedes, BMW, Audi etc)
- Ultra Luxury (Bentley, Rolls Royce, Aston)
- Exotic (Lambo, Ferrari, McLaren). You could even break exotic further between Supercars and Hypercars (Bugatti, Pagani, Koenigsegg)

Some brands also have models that cross segments like the Audi R8.

Don’t buy a Tesla, lease it - the tech is changing so rapidly it’s like an iPhone at this point and will be out of date in 5 years.

Personally, I’ve had a used BMW that is, unfortunately, exorbitant in repair costs, but has been incredibly fun to drive. That’d be my vote, I think Mercs are a bit stodgy for someone our YOEs.

likefunny

EY16, of course it’s not apples to apples. The point is leasing is generally a luxury. And when you lease luxury cars it’s double luxury but it often feels easier because the monthly payments are less

like

None - Alfa Romeo Giulia is the best in that range

This is a joke right? You’d have to pay ME before I drove an Alfa Romeo

‘Tesla’ and ‘luxury’ aren’t synonymous. Recommend going with one of your other choices if luxury is specifically your aim.

Compare the Tesla’s quality to the upcoming Lucid.

The Lucid apparently blows it out of the water

Don’t get a BMW, I had a lot of problems with those! Audi is a much better choice

likesmarthelpful

Some models, yes. Drive a RS5 and see if your opinion changes.

Many of the “wealthy” people I know drive very understated cars. Grand Cherokee, Lexus RX, GMC Yukon, or a nice F150. What’s the common thread? Good reliability, good residual values, good comfort, not ostentatious looking. I think they’re onto something... btw, lease don’t buy.

likefunny

Lease vs buy - I was same boat as you and assume your job has you traveling. I chose to buy - bmw 330 ci. So happy I bought because I travelled so much I had low mileage and I bought a car I really liked so kept it forever (loved having no payments). I liked buying new. It was high end (but not the highest) when I bought, but was within my budget. Sucks to over extend yourself -you lose some of the enjoyment. We seem to have a throw away culture, even though good market for used cars, so I feel better owning for a long time - unless you want to treat your car like your phone (e.g. get a new phone and car every few years - seems wasteful to me)

Buy the Tesla. If you’re buying a new car, Idk why anyone would buy an non-EV

A12, I did the same as well. No regrets.

Model 3. If you drive it, it's hard to go back to ICE cars.

Model 3(I have one)c I’m not a luxury car person. It’s rlly cheap to maintain. Pays for itself. I’d consider it the tech bros Toyota. Maxed out on all options and I love it.

I test shopped this price range for gas cars and it was Mercedes>Audi>BMW imo. Has an order in for the Mercedes until one day…

No interest in Tesla, but happened to walk by the store in the mall, so took a quick test drive. IT WILL BLOW YOU AWAY. Nothing else in this price range compares.

Best purchase I’ve ever made. The Tesla Model 3 is perfection.

likeupliftingfunny

K1 it does indicate there are more significant positive variables than just one dimension as A12 is alluding to. In the 50k+ segment, certainly novelty and acceleration are at play, but reliability, software, handling, safety, utility and low cost of ownership are the current variables that Tesla is indexing well in with consumers.

And more importantly, each sold Tesla right now is a lost sale on a cross shopped 50k+ car. BMW is a brand losing many customers to Tesla today.

Lexus. Luxury but also durable. Repairs aren’t as expensive as German competitors

likesmartfunny

There’s a reason it’s cheaper…

I have an audi and wouldn't trade for any of these you mentioned

You’re not going to like this answer, but get a Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, or something affordable but non-standard to make it a little more appealing, put the incremental cash in a SPY fund, and then get a luxury car as your next car. If committed to luxury now, I would go X3. Space of an SUV but drives like a sedan. Won’t break the bank either.

likefunny

Hmm good suggestion. Been driving my used Nissan while I build my nest egg. Already at $330K NW at age 27 so wanted to splurge a little (grew up poor).

Although, if I’m honest, my dream car since I was a kid was an exotic (Gallardo when I was younger and Huracan/Aventador now) so maybe I should forgo an intermediate purchase now and keep investing until I can afford one of those.

Just buy a lexus or acura

Alfa Romeo Giulia is by far the best choice. I’m leasing one. The model 3 and 3 series are incredibly boring in comparison. At least test drive the Giulia.

Tesla will appreciate. All the others, once the upside down car market rebounds, will sharply decline. Do not get a used Benz. Second choice here is BMW with low/no miles and look into service contracts

funnylike

Tesla as a stock will appreciate, and over long term most likely in line withe the rest of the market.

Tesla as a product will not appreciate as long as the company can match the demand. However, after 30-40 years it might start seeing appreciation as a historic vehicle.

In the midterm, product appreciation will follow the curve of similar products (ex ipad)

Model 3 is definitely far from luxury and at this point it doesn’t even get you any clout 😂 I would go with a bmw/merc all day and yes I have driven the Tesla on 3 occasions now

like

Most teenagers today aspire to own a Tesla over any other auto, luxury or not. Doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate other cars too, but Tesla is the benchmark for GenZ. That is what’s troubling car manufacturers today. When I was 17, I wanted a BMW and when I could, I bought one.

What happens when an entire generation forsakes the German luxury brands is not good.
