Every year I get asked to join a union. I don't think I need to, of course, until I actually need their support. What do you think?

I wondered about the dues myself, that is until last year when I got called into the office and was accused of saying something I did not concerning a teacher who was let go. The principal himself told the class and because they took it out into the building ( students did not like the guy and he was fired for cussing at the kids and yelling) anyway, got back to the superintendent and the principal was called in. He proceeded to do the same to me because I was a Co-teacher in the class, so I heard it. My union rep was right there to help and guide and she was worth every penny of dues I have ever paid. That is why you have representation. I will never question being in the teachers union again. Also, my daughter had her class switched last Monday. She was not told what they were doing until the union rep went with her. She was all set up for kindergarten and they switched her to young fives. Totally different room set up, lessons, etc. they, the admin was going to sit on it for a few more days, her union rep got the answers needed. She is still working on her room by the way, staff reported today. When you need representation, that is the unions job to help and protect

Well doesn’t your union negotiate for YOU too???

like

Join your union. They are already working to protect you.

I would definitely do so. I have taught for 29 years and have had to go to my Union twice because of 2 different administrators not doing their job to keep me safe.

Our union does so much for us, especially with contract negotiations and union support when difficulties arise with Admins. I’ve never even questioned it, especially with DCFS, immigration issues and other things that could come up.

like

I too have needed them from time to time and they won’t help you if you are not already a member

your union negotiates for you and handles grievances

If you and your new co-workers don't, or don't see the value, eventually the union will be lost. Wisconsin lost our unions due to our governor and as much as some would like to argue nothing has changed, I see changes. I have had classes as big as 34 students, we have additional duties (which are unpaid and we are told "Don't you want to do what is best for kids?"), we are told to have lunch meetings, etc. All things we could have asked our Union to help us with. But no union, no help.

We don’t have a choice.

I was a Union Rep in my district the last two years. I was thoroughly disheartened with what I saw. Our union is much more concerned with having a good "relationship" with admin than actually protecting its members. Nothing I brought to the table even made it to the labor management committee because our president decoded it wasn't a big enough deal. We had our contract negotiations last year and literally brought nothing to the table, and allowed our super to add language making it easier for our district to cut more staff. At any rate, I resigned my position and left the union. Maybe my lack of dues will hit harder than my words did.

I guess I would suggest finding someone in the union who is not a rep, and see how they feel about their union. I have seen some really good, strong groups who do really fight for their members. I just don't have access to one.

I’m looking to either sublet/sublease/join a lease with roommates for an apartment in West Loop (walkable to Union Station/Metra). Female roommates preferred (I’m 25F single) but would be open to male roommates if clean/preferably I can get my own bathroom. In unit washer/dryer and gym in building also preferred. Budget and move in date are both flexible but September/October is preferred. Please DM/let me know if you know of anyone looking w/ info about the apartment and other roommates!

I’m torn looking at 2020 as an outlier or including both years to be more objective? We had a good year this year and it compares fine next to 2020 numbers. My thinking here is events impact our lead gen and revenue numbers and as we all know this year events slowly started up. Looking forward to 2022 having even more events 🤞 Hopefully no variants
