I write my time on a yellow pad. I may be old school, but I’m not old. One time an original gangster lawyer, like an old timer, sat me down and said “I work from 8-6 everyday, I take a 30 min lunch at my desk to read the paper, but I otherwise I work hard. As such, I bill every hour of that day other than the 30 mins. If I don’t have work, I leave to surprise my wife, my kids, or go to movie. I don’t waste time waiting for work and I maximize my time when I have it.”

Timers

like

Use timers, keep track of your time throughout the day, enter/release your time daily if possible. Don’t let it go more than weekly.

Enter your time as you go. Always for everything to the extent possible.

Use excel “or whatever you are comfortable with,” bill as you go, and figure out what task are commonly (or expected to be) billed whenever. Specific task is performed. Never try to “recreate” what you did after the fact.

Enter your time contemporaneously, if not daily (or the next day, at worst). If you keep up with your time via stickies/notepad, as I do, make sure to jot a note out beside the clock start/end time as to what matter AND for what purpose.

like

Use timekeeping software. It takes 10 seconds or less to open a new entry. Even if you don't flesh out the entire entry, you can at least start your thoughts

like

Start billing activity first thing in the morning. Resist the urge to first read legal news, do administrative tasks. Do those things after a deserved break time later in the day.

32 yr old female. I'm currently a senior consultant (for 3 years), previously was a product manager for 4 years and prior to that had a bunch of different experiences as HR advisor/coordinator... While I have some industry experience, I've been realizing in the last 2 years that I need to start specializing if I want to move up and build expertise in 'something'. Side note : I have 2 bachelors in International management and marketing and a master of science in marketing. Continues in comments
