I think you overestimate how hard it is to be a SWE at FAANG + M (and other big N) F/G are a lot harder than Amazon / MSFT, the latter requiring talent but nowhere near as much so imo
AWS has great people. Not quite sure that there is a difference between them and F/G.

The Venn diagram overlap of candidates good enough for MBB and candidates good enough for FAANG SWE out of UG is very, very small. I went to Harvard and the number of classmates who got cross-industry offers was tiny. But the ones that did all picked tech lol - can’t beat the comp at junior levels
Keep telling yourself whatever helps you sleep better at night
Went from MBB to be tech PM. I’ll tell you what - there is no correlation between SWE and consultant.
That said, all the money is in equity.
I’ve seen people think they can just take a free coding boot camp and then go on to immediately apply to FAANG SWE positions 😂
I know a guy that dropped out of community college but now works at google as a software(?) engineer. (Site reliability or something not sure if same as SWE). Some people just climb no matter what lol

SWE position FAANG is much more competitive imo. They don’t shell out six figure bases to undergrads for nothing.
This. EY1 is right. I worked as a developer, CS major. Not everyone starts out with the salary you’re seeing and faang is a lot more competitive than getting a good consulting gig. Also liking what you’re doing is huge. I switched to consulting - even with deadlines/go lives the scrum and agile method is no joke. There’s intense pressure- as hard as this is I’ll continue here over swe most days. Check out your tech/cyber groups some came to consulting from dev/swe.
I actually don’t think the two are related. Technical skills are often very different than consulting skills.
MBB requires a different skillset. Comparing apples to oranges.
For recent graduates
The top software engineers go to work for FANG
The top "stuff" engineers go to work for Elon Musk
The top MBAs/Econ/etc go to work for MBB/investment banks
I have people skills, not technical skills.
Mck2, it hurts me on the inside that you didn't get the reference and likely haven't watched office space. Please watch it...
And thank you sm1 for cluing in the presumably younger generation
Why do ppl think consultant and SWE are interchangeable? Completely different fields of expertise.
Me: Senior Consultant, SWE
I think this person meant that if you weren’t MBB tier (top of the top) then FAANG would have been hard. Like if you had to settle for big 4, you would have had to settle for a lower SWE job. Not saying I agree but I don’t think the point was that a consultant can switch at anytime
D5 that’s what OP is saying but the rest of us are saying that comparison doesn’t make sense. Not being able to get to the top of one field doesn’t mean you can’t make it in another. For example, put Kendrick Lamar through college and tell him to get a job at Google as a SWE. If he can’t make it then he can’t be at the top elsewhere?

You also forgot to adjust for cost of living (pre covid). For other jobs, you get to live wherever you want and potentially live in much better col cities
