Shouldn’t you be thanking him?
This post has been done before, I read something similar in other bowl
Maybe try reasoning with your partner that their mom’s been done before, but that doesn’t mean that she wouldn’t like another go. Try furrowing a brow when you say it so you look earnest and thoughtful. After 20-30 times your partner should become more hostile and annoyed and you’ll feel better. The work will still suck, but you’ll be even. And as Bill Bernbach said if you can’t get creative, get even.
Cw 1 - i would if he had suggestions on how to take the idea further. Even my cd wants to kick him through a wall. He literally enters a room from no where and starts destroying ideas. He lives for this shit
Yes. My partner.
Same. Never builds on anything. Just constantly gives reasons why something won’t work, even before it’s been concepted
It could be worse. Your boss could say in a meeting that awards jury forgets and it's ok to rip off ideas from 5 years ago.
Yes. They never seem to be able to come up with any good ideas though...
I say this and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I would argue it’s a part of my job. If I’m your CD and I let something slide out of the office that’s been done before, I am fucked, embarrassed and potentially let go. So I will proudly (and constructively and not be a dick about it) tell you that shit and offer ways to look at different approaches to arrive at a more unique solution. I agree, though, that’s it’s never cool to shit on something and walk away. But I might point something out that years in the category or industry have shown me and help you/us to try something fresh.
Always be the first to be the second
“I feel like there’s a better idea then this.”
“Ok. What is it?”
“I don’t know. I just know that there is.”
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Why would they have suggestions on taking further an idea that has been done before? If anything, they should be suggesting something entirely new and different.
Nothing is new
I had a CD who thought if an idea had been done before, that meant it was good and we should pursue it. Especially if it won awards.
I always kill my own ideas if someone points out its been done, but the question is, is it different than the thing you’re pointing to? Sometimes a setup or element is similar but the insight or overall point is different.
Simpsons did it!
@ACD1: That CD who told you to pursue ideas that have been done (especially if they won awards) is what all my former CDs would refer to as a Hack.
Suck the life out of ypu
Senior copywriter - because if there’s a truth there, maybe there’s a different way of doing it. Sometimes it takes two people to roll it round on the finger for a bit before you can decide whether or not it’s worthless or changeable. Can’t just say “it’s been done before”. That completely shuts the conversation down and is very uninspiring to work with. It makes you want to clamp shut
CD1: I agree they could say it more constructively, but it’s still better than letting you waste tons of time crafting and blowing up something that eventually you’ll have to kill (once it reaches an ECD or the CCO, who’ll likely recognize it as something that’s been done and be able to point exactly to said previous campaign. I’ve seen it happen before and the feeling is even worse).
I had a teacher once say: there are no new ideas, just new approaches 🤷♀️
