Excluding 401k, how much savings have you accrued since starting work (and when did you start)?

I am 25 y/o,just met my emergency fund goal & want to improve my investment portfolio. I am putting just enough in my 401k to meet the employer match, and am wondering if I should open up a roth IRA OR just invest in a non retirement fund OR max out my 401k. My concern with the roth IRA/401k is that I wont be able to use the $$ for my big purchases (hoping to buy a house in the next 5 years), but don’t want to miss out on the tax benefits. Which is the smarter choice and what are you guys doing?
