Exist opportunities from big 4 vs middle market- is big 4 really better in the long run?

Big 4 has the pedigree, middle market has the well rounded experience. It’s a matter of how you present yourself for any particular role. Having worked at both, it is definitely easier to be seen as someone capable of doing the job if you come from big 4. But that’s based on a comparison of generic candidates with no other discernible qualities.

This is spot on

Depends on the type of work/responsibilities you are exposed to in your specific role, your team environment. This can’t be a black and white answer

On average big4 leads to better exit ops in industry. Key word is average. I’ve seen people form middle market firms get great exit ops in industry. I think it’s just easier to get jobs at more well known/brand name firms form big 4 and might be more of an uphill battle from middle market. Not impossible form middle market though.

Most job postings will say big4 preferred however they interview many candidates and pick the best from there based on the interview. I am nonbig4 and have never felt like I would have gotten an offer if I had big4 experience on my resume. I’ve been in industry a few years and just got a VP role at a publicly traded company despite not having any SEC experience.

Look at your long term goal. Everyone’s goal is different, some want to be partner, some want to work in industry eventually. What is your end goal? It would be easier to answer the question with that in mind.

**typo -exit, not exist; My end goal is to work in industry eventually. I’m wondering if my opportunities would be limited if I jump to a middle market public accounting firm before going to industry, that it would limit my options

Depends on the firm. RSM vs Big 4 is probably not a drastic difference, but if you start to get down to firms out of the top ten, it could start to affect your exit ops.

I just accepted an offer for Fortune 250 out of GT but did experience preference/bias to B4 with some other applications. I don’t think it’s as big of a gap as advertised.

IA Manager. I’m from the Risk side so already was in IA.

For folks exiting to FAANG / Product at start ups or really any hot company. How do you go about networking to get the interview? Do you apply then cold email someone you may have an “in”with, or are you picking say 10 companies and then having warm contacts there that you’ll ping when you see a job. I’ve been passively looking for jobs but zero luck, I only want to leave for the right fit. Big 4 here so feel my brand won’t auto get me an interview like mbb/t2
