Be prepared to let go of Thanksgiving if you stay here for the holidays. It isn't celebrated over here (unless you live in Norfolk and even then it's a different day than the American one I think). That being said, I love spending Christmas in Australia. If you haven't rung in the new year in 80 degree weather you aren't a true expat yet.
Flights to the US (and elsewhere) are insane this year since it’s the first time Australians can leave the country since before COVID. It’s like A$4000 minimum for economy.
I would stay and enjoy summer in Australia this year, and target a trip home in US spring/summer at a time that is not Aussie school holidays (aka not Easter or the 2 weeks in June/July that vary by state). Thanksgiving will be tough to replicate since it’s not a thing (and turkey is not common in Australia). Christmas is very much about seafood at lunch compared to a Christmas [Eve] ham-based dinner, but it’s a festive season without the snow.
