First of all congratulations 🎊🍾🎈 Babies are fun and as a father of 3 (3,8,8) It’s certainly a challenge to balance both. My wife and I both have professional careers, she has a private practice and a full time job. So number one just enjoy the leave when the child is first born. Do not worry there will be plenty of work when you return. Also we found it helpful to stagger my leave so my wife could have a better return to work. So I took 4 weeks to start and the remainder when my wife returned so my child spent 20 weeks with a parent. Also if possible see if you or your spouse can stagger your work week to both reduce child care costs but also give more time with your child. For child care having a nanny is much more preferable to daycare in my opinion. Especially if you can find someone you who can be reliable usually it helps a ton to then ask family members to babysit for dates on the weekend. Ok so something not mentioned is that your partner/husband is not going to be helpful at some point and your going to want to murder him most likely because he is not going to understand the physical, emotional and mental strain of having the baby. And make some dumbass comment. Book a vacation now when the baby is 3 months to go someplace close for a weekend. An app that I recommend to every parent is “The Wonder Weeks” it will help you with your sanity during the first two years to understand that childrens development shapes their behavior and that your kid might actually be fussy because they are learning a new skill. Oh and enjoy the peace and quiet right now in your life. It’s 5:50am and my kids are already up.

Also Pro tip: When you go on that mentioned above vacation, your husband should book a house cleaner. This way when you come back home your house is clean and everything feels in order. …also… Your going to spend a lot of money 💰 it’s okay if you can make it through the first year of a child’s life with your sanity and money in the bank you have done a good job 👍

Get a good nanny or an opair.

Reliable child care is the answer. Whether it’s a nanny, daycare, parents, back up babysitter etc. And congratulations OP!

Congratulations OP! Please take some time off is what I would say. Those early periods with the baby are transformative to the relationship and I feel you really shouldn’t lose out on that. A 6 month break will not really affect your career.

Means au pair. Take time off, those early stages are 💫 don't sweat it, just reentered work, it is pretty much the same after a year

Congrats! Take your parental leave, make sure to take your PTO every year, and set boundaries. I work a pseudo flexible schedule (off by 4:30, then back after 7:30) to spend family time

Enjoy your parental leave. After going back to work make wake up part of your quality time routine. Kids are rested and happy abs there’s great book/song/playtime. Choose a bedtime that gives you a nice hour or so together. Make peace with the real quality time bring weekends, and appreciating that they have diversity of interaction from caregiver or daycare.

How much is an au pair?

In most states in the US (except MA) it’s about $10k agency fees, $10k in stipend/cash to the au pair + au pair’s transport (car or subway), education allowance, cellphone, groceries etc (maybe $26k total)

We have a cleaning lady, daycare, and I work at night and during the baby's nap time on the weekends to be free when he's up and running. This way I spend about 1 to 1.5 hours hanging out before daycare and about 3 to 4 hours after daycare each day. It all depends on how late he wakes and goes to sleep. Been doing this for over six months, best solutions I've come up with. Hope something helps you.

Good routine

Has anyone here used the "Read Scripture" app? It goes through the entire Bible and includes accompanying summary videos from "The Bible Project" (whose videos can also be found on YouTube). I love how it groups portions of Scripture and the videos are helpful for making meaningful connections with the text. I love these for myself, but they're super kid-friendly, too. Excellent support for your daily study. Enjoy!

I'm considering a Research Lead offer from a Series A start-up in NYC and admittedly don't really know how to evaluate it. First user research hire and the pay is US $178K plus stock options of 7100 shares. I think the pay is a bit low for the current market, but not sure how to assess the shares. I noticed they have no 401K or IRA, and they don't say anything about parental leave policies. Is this typical for a Series A start-up to not offer retirement plans? And is this fair comp? Thanks!

What is the best gift you got as a new parent? A coworker just had his first kid and went on paternity leave. I just started with the team but offered to send him a gift. Should synthetic abortion be a thing? I.e. it is made legal for a man to declare before a judge that he wants no part in a child’s life prior to the child being born. He then has no requirement to pay child support but will also never have the right to see the child. Essentially, it’s abortion from the male side. If both man and woman are required to create a pregnancy, but only the woman gets a say after that if the child will be born, is that fair to the man?

Welcome to our pre-k inclusive classroom. Even with 8 students, and only face to face for 4 hours, we struggle. We struggle being heard through our masks. We struggle with social distancing. We struggle as we find ourselves constantly reminding students to keep their masks on. We struggle to keep them engaged and to teach. One thing we do not struggle with- building connections and showing out love for each child.
