After you get the offer and before you accept, ask about insurance and policies, but don’t specifically ask about maternity leave. See if you can get the info you need without sending up a red flag
If asking about mat leave is going to raise a red flag with the prospective company, that is not a company I personally would want to work for. That is something every woman interested in having children should ask about. I suspect it would be hard to negotiate for if not already a benefit since it has significant value, but you should definitely try. An employer with an offer on the table would be in a terribly risky predicament to rescind an offer because of that request, especially in today’s climate.
Is it something you can scope out on Glassdoor? If not, since you are expecting an offer in hand shortly, I would wait for that before asking about mat leave. In case you're kicking off any new prospective conversations concurrently, I ask about benefits on the first recruiter call so I can appropriately determine what my compensation requirements are. Best of luck and congrats on your growing family!
Wait for offer. Then ask.
