Expecting our first baby soon. What are some things/gifts I can get him or things we can do that will be special, that he can use throughout childhood or even remember throughout life? OP first of all congratulations. Do not underestimate parental instincts. They teach a lot as you go through each phase of your child’s growth. Also always remember each child is different and never ever compare them against others. One last thing that will help them is to start a 509 savings plan or any other custodial savings plan from day 1 and set it on automatic savings mode. I will start when the child ...... does not work. Good luck.

For what it’s worth (24 year old perspective), my parents did none of these things for me but we had and have a very close relationship, so I’m not sure it matters too much... for the most part, I don’t think kids care about any of this stuff until their parents are gone... my father is recently deceased, and I wish there was some videos of him, giving his top pieces of advice or saying how much he loved me...keeping that record as a graduation gift could be sweet, and probably would be valued even more once you’re gone... but honestly, quality uninterrupted time is the most difficult gift to give, that you and your SO will have to challenge yourself to supply daily... that’s the best gift, imo:)

My parents got me a stuffed animal, and saved another identical of those stuffed animals until I was an adult. So now I can give the same stuffed animal to my own kid.

likeuplifting

Yes!!! Or just have a back up or two in case something happens to the original (dog eats it/ left at hotel, etc.). That being said, I feel like the stuffed animal you pick really becomes a theme for your kid so pick wisely 😅 I had a monkey and my family called me “monkey” growing up and always gave me more stuffed animal monkeys. And Aeropostale got way too much of my fam’s money lol. My sister got a doctor dog in scrubs and now she’s a doctor... not saying there’s a link but I’m definitely closer to a monkey than a doctor haha

Maybe leave him a personal video diary that he gets to see when he’s older. Parents pass away and it’s hard on the child at any age. Having a video that provides your inner thoughts and love for your child would help and be cherished.

Heard a great recommendation close to my second sons birth—create an email address for them and every so often drop a message, video, e-card, etc. to that email. Give them the login access on their graduation.

like

We wrote our son a letter for his 18th birthday a week after he was born to capture that whole experience and how special it was to have him come into the world. We also have an email chain going to capture cool moments as he grows up

Just be there for him in the moment. That’s the most important thing he’ll remember.

Honestly I feel like a lot of these responses are not coming from parents. Splurge for professional baby photos and get some of you and your partner with baby. These will last forever and are the absolute best investment we made. I also have a birth to 18 journal (on Amazon) that has prompts for recording special moments, baby’s growth, etc. I personally like having something physical with my handwriting to pass down vs an email account.

like

The biggest gift you can give him is your time. From this moment forward you need to reprioritize and ensure that he gets your quality time. That is what he will remember. Be present.

like

Quality is definitely related to quantity, the more time you spend the more quality moments you will have. When I think of quality time I think of time where you are present meaning not distracted by other things completely focused on your child.

Open an account and start saving for his education. Every time his grandparents give him money, put it there. You’re probably looking at $500K for college in 19 years - hopefully the market will cooperate. The email idea is genius, I wish we had done that.

We have a 1 year old and 2 year old cat. They are partners in crime. My wife grew up with a cat and still has so many fond memories of growing up with her bff. If you could afford it and have the space a pet to grow up with really helps them learn and grow a bond.

S1, I first read this as you have 2 cats, one and two years old, and I was wondering what it had to do with a baby. Then I read it again and realized one of them was your child.

Start a 529 fund... I started one for my son around 2 months after he was born. Now he turns 1 and there is already 10k in it. I wanted him to have a debt free education and this was the best gift I received from my parents

I love our newborn photos. Having the moments captured was amazing and I look back often. My four year old loves to loon at them and gear stories about when he was a baby, and he loves seeing himself in the photos from the 2 year olds photos.

I love the photos idea. I set up an email address that my husband and I can send stuff for my daughter now that we will reveal we set this up when she’s older so she can see the emails from us then

Buy a nice watch to mark the occasion! Wear the watch for the next 18-22 years and gift it to him when he graduates high school or college.

Well I'm a first time mom and feel home bound running the baby cycles. My baby is not a good sleeper so I feel like I am on 24/7. When he is a asleep in doing the usual bottles, dinner etc. I feel like I need more confidence to get myself and baby out of the house with everything in tow but I suppose walking through malls could help. Houston heat doesn't make it ideal to walk around outside during the day. I also do the night cycles solo so I'm pretty much too exhausted to do anything but want to get more scheduled about it so I can plan on an hour here and there when my husband gets home.

Anyone know much about routers? My father in Leander has an incredibly fast Asus router, but his home is 7,000 sq ft and the signal completely dies when you go up the stairs to their mother in law suite where their tv is. Our nanny takes my 7 month old out for one, sometimes 2, long walks every day (weather permitting). Love the idea of fresh air every day but its often for several hours at a time and he always returns home crying bc she's pushed him to his limit between feedings. She brushes it off saying hes just fussy which kind of irks me. Im also concerned that he's spending too much time strapped in a stroller. Is it reasonable to ask her to take shorter walks? Am I overreacting?

The US bowls seem to be reporting large retention bonuses, so was wondering if UK is similar
