Hi guys,
I am currently on notice period and my LWD is Sep 2, 2022. Today, I got an offer from state street mentioning my joining date as Sep 12, 2022 even though I already told HR that I would like to join from Sep 5 itself. How can I convince HR to prepone my joining date to Sep 5, 2022. I don't want to lose my one week salary guys. Pls suggest. State Street

Experience. I know far too many people from “elite” schools who are terrible at their jobs, and far too many from “safety” schools who are quite good.

For what purpose? Because if you want to be a lawyer at a biglaw firm, you won’t even get there without pedigree.
I’m not looking to pivot. I feel its a tough endeavor being in my mid-30s. But I see a lot of leaders in my filed with JD MBA Phd etc. Its more to become more marketable.
Agree with all the posts re law firms being snobby. While it isn’t limited to t14, you really need to have good experience or a b4 LLM to get someone to look at you. They’ll “almost” reject a proven commodity and go with pedigree about 90% of the time.
Pedigree all the way. I’ve never felt worthy of my success with my state school degree. Wish I’d studied art history at an Ivy so I could work at a museum and look down my nose at all the state school plebeians.
The snark is strong with you. And I love every bit of it
Campus hire or or someone pivoting
💯 agree. I was agreeing with you overall, so don’t want you to think otherwise. While I’ve seen success in both, I see the pivots as generally more known quantities if they have real experience.
Out of undergrad, the exit opportunities are similar from the vast majority of schools. Only a small handful of elite schools offer job prospects that most other schools can’t deliver (things like investment banking at Goldman Sachs). Outside of that, though, the school you go to isn’t that important. Anyone with a top GPA at an accredited university can get a job at a big 4 or mid size public accounting firm.
Where pedigree matters more is from the top business schools or law schools, which again offer job prospects that the non top tier schools don’t offer. Jobs like working on the buy side of large hedge funds or becoming an associate attorney at large international law firms are what I’m talking about (that’s not completely true for law firms, though, as someone could get a top position at a law firm by graduating in the top of their class of a less highly ranked law school).
Still though I think work experience is more valuable overall. You just learn and can apply so much from work experience. But the reality is that a select few jobs are only available to people who went to certain top schools.
