In principle, those in consulting have not yet made it to a role in tech, so it is not a matter of preference I would say.

It’s important to distinguish between large public tech companies vs. other tech companies/startups as the latter don’t have the huge RSU component that is the main contributor to the difference in total comp.

I personally made the choice to go into consulting for the variety of projects, the travel, and to improve my soft skills. Money optimization wasn’t on my mind, but if it was I would agree with OP that if you’re 1 sigma above mean ability you’d probably earn more in big tech, and if you’re 3 sigma you can make it rich even quicker in finance (although the golden days have also passed to some extent). Occasionally I regret passing up those opportunities.

That being said, I have been thinking about switching, especially now that travel isn’t a thing. Maybe after we have a better sense of what the post-COVID working world looks like.

The average person in tech is significantly more talented than the average person in consulting.

I think framing it as a choice is wrong in the majority of cases.

like

I disagree with U1 because I think the skill sets / personality required for the average employee in tech vs consulting are quite different - especially if you’re really looking at software/PM folks in tech vs strategy consultants but even if you’re looking at strategy folks across both. Apples and oranges.

Worked in tech for 20 years - moves to consulting 10 years ago - consulting comp much much better

like

A1 - em, it is true - no “may well” about it

It may not be the same for everyone - tech and consulting are big domains

Is it the norm - don’t know, but I know a helluva lot of people that are doing a helluva lot better in consulting than tech.

If you are going to stay tech - developer, architect - comp will tap out. Most people generally go into sales, marketing, PM roles and end up leading big teams or divisions.

The inflection point is around the equivalent senior manager point - can you make PPMD in consulting or can you make VP in a tech company. Tech route comp tends to be more non-base comp - options.

Worked in tech for a 15 years. Moved to Consulting 5 years ago. Reasons:

Better comp

Better opportunities, not much opportunity for learning new tech in tech

More challenging work, tend to get siloed in tech, consulting makes you wear many hats

More diverse problems to help solve
Constant evolution of self from project to project

Able to build wider if not deeper network

Opportunity to work cross industries

Less boring

lol I moved from consulting TO tech for the same exact reasons as you. So OP, anecdotal data points won't really get you the answers you're looking for.

Appeared for KPMG interview 45 days back. HR is intentionally delaying offer release. Done with 2nd round of interview in last week of July. My Lwd is in oct first week. She took documents on 23rd Aug and did salary discussion a week later. And giving shitty excuses like waiting for approval. Approver is on leave bla bla. Has anyone faced such issue with this company? I never expected such a shitty and worst recruitment process from a BIG4
