I'm accepting a strat position today after 8 years in account 🤩 been a huge dream to switch and I did so by completely tailorimg my resume to show I have experience and exposure without regressing to a JR title. I sold myself in as the best of both worlds and it helped differentiate me

I switched from copy to account! I might suggest looking into smaller shops / startups where there’s more of a collaborative vibe and less defined swim lanes (speaking from experience, you’re less likely to end up taking a step back, though it comes with its own cons as well). Either way, the good thing is you already know how to do the role whether you’ve technically done it or not - you certainly know what makes a good/bad brief, so you can start by selling that skill! My mixed background has only ever been a blessing, both in doing the job and standing out/getting the job.

Do you have a good relationship with any of the strategists in your agency? I wonder if you could seek out some mentorship or side assignments to do on your own time to test drive a bit before you jump. Sometimes it’s easier to switch laterally in your own company than to get a job elsewhere in a new department without stepping back.

Putting on my former head of strategy hat: I’d definitely look at your own agency or small shops and others have mentioned. But outside of finding a job, I think there are so many flavors of strategist and it’s important to think about both which kind you want to be, and how you can best position yourself for the transition. So I’d start by reflecting or having a conversation with a strategy lead you trust on what type of projects or what part of the strategy process you’d ALREADY be awesome at. Because of your art background, maybe that’s something like experiential projects, or being really awesome at collaborating with creative teams to refine execution, or if you also have a design background, maybe it’s identity projects, etc. Basically see where you have superpowers that another strategist may not have. That’s your starting point. From there, I’d start looking at what major skill gaps do you have and how can you fill them? Do you need to learn qual research techniques? Or you probably already think about a competitive analysis in your art role, but maybe only from an aesthetic perspective, not a business and marketing perspective, etc. Then start chipping away at learning or supporting your existing strategy team on those activities. I’ll say from my experience, having a creative on my team who was super interested in supporting the strategy process was always helpful. Good luck!

Hi. I have a question. In a world where COVID is under control, how would you feel if your companies went back to being fully in the office? But maybe others were adopting a hybrid model- some days remote, some days in the office. Would it make you want to work elsewhere? How important is being able to work remote (at a location of your choice, not at client /travelling) a few days a week to your job satisfaction?
