But I never understand why people think I'd be okay NOT getting paid for an extended period of time...🤔

That's why 'the bench' is more of a descriptive term to non-consultants... It's just like being on the bench in sports: you're getting paid your salary, but you have to stay in shape and be ready to play at any moment. Also like in sports, your bonus and job security can be threatened by too much bench time.

well some boutique firms pay you more of your billable rate (you are effectively hourly) and you can do beach time but you aren't getting paid. it's a trade off. considering how good my firm was at keeping me billable and off the beach id much rather be hourly

like

Wait so you're telling me you get paid while not being on a project? Incomprehensible.

Well I like to call it the beach for the first couple of weeks but after that it's the bench because I'm ready for coach to sub me in lol.

My office calls it the bench.

we officially call it bench time but in reality it is beach time. I think that's the joke?

I am feeling pretty miserable on my current project and it sometimes feels like there’s no end in sight. Team is great, client isn’t too bad but I always have a huge work load and I’m constantly stressed by tight deadlines. Don’t necessarily want to roll off because I really like my team, but am also not sure at what point to put my mental health before my career goals. Any advice would be appreciated.

So most people are WFH for the next few months probably. Does anyone feel like they’re learning the same amount as a junior if things were normal (more hands on, direct interaction, normal production, etc)? Would you consider the 6-12 months of working from home as proper experience to push you to mid level? I want to advance to mid-level (🤑) but also genuinely am concerned that maybe I’m not learning the ins and outs that I normally would as a junior right now.
