Biggest winner last night, Green Party.
I recently interviewed for L7 EM at Google and had 4 great interviews and one not so great system design. I submitted external referrals all of which gave great feedback. The recruiter said the next step is team match/interviews and then the HC. Anyone in a similar situation? What was the result? Google

Just saying, I was about to leave a job once (also deeply toxic).. was one week away from a job offer elsewhere (raise and promo) and got term'd. They thought they did something lol. The extra bump from the severance package went straight to a down-payment on a house. I'd hang on as long as you can.
A5, no I didn't say anything but they also never asked and I've never lied or hid anything.. They wanted me started asap but background checks took a few weeks.
I feel for you as I was in a situation. Tolerate as much as you can and as long as you can while aggressively looking.
Think of it an opportunity to look around while still being paid.
I know it’s tough but try to sit tight as long as you can!
I stayed at my toxic workplace until I got something lined up. Then I put in my two weeks
This is what I did as well. I will say that it did impact my mental health because I had to stay longer than I wanted to. But I did it so there wasn't a gap in income.
I would hang on as long as possible or explore if a mental health leave of absence would be possible.
I was in the same exact position as you last year. I think the advice another commenter gave is solid - think of this as being paid to shop around, but I know every incremental day you spend there hurts more and more, which is why you should be aggressively interviewing. Use sick days if you need to.
Also if you keep thinking of it as “boss relies on me and only me to do X”, and you doing X is upsetting you, what you’re actually saying is you’re choosing your boss/company’s success over your own mental health… bad spot to be in. Once you get far enough in interview processes, you can quit. And if you can’t take it anymore and you are confident they wouldn’t let you take a LOA (not sure if that 12 month rule is written in your employee handbook somewhere?), then honestly, just quit. No job is worth sacrificing your mental health. There are plenty other jobs and companies out there and life is long. My 2¢ as someone who went through this.
I quit before having an offer. Part of the reason was my lease was ending and I’d rather quit than stay for another year. The other reason was I felt like my mental health was much more important than having something lined up immediately. I also knew that I was capable of finding another position. So when I quit, I was able to devote more time into applying than if I were to stay.
If the recruiter asked about my employment, I would be honest about it and it was very similar to what you said about how the role description was not what you expected.
Leaving your toxic work will not affect your professional reputation. You can always justify your action. Just be honest and don't worry too much about it.
Depends on the state, but you don’t have to say you got fired.
I’ve been fired and laid off before, when interviewing my response is always looking for better opportunities.
If you get fired, file for unemployment, and THEN find something, that’s different.
I’ve found that you don’t have to be as up front about information as you think. Less is more.
You shouldn’t go into detail about why you’re leaving either, just keep it brief. You wanted new challenges, you wanted to see what else is out there, you want to gain new skills and sharpen the skills you already have.
Would it be possible to say that you wanted to be able to focus on your job search? Doing so could make it go more smoothly both for the exit & the interview process.
Well firstly, I am sorry you currently work for such a toxic work environment, working in a place like that not only affects you all you are the on the clock but it follows you home and can life absolutely miserable :( Secondly, why are you concerned you will be fired? Is it because you are concerned your current job will find out you are looking for a new role and fire you to be petty or are you worried they are simply planning on firing you already? Because if you think you might get fired you might hang out and them do it (if you have not found a new job yet) you might ger severance pay if they fire you and some states require that an employee has to pay out any unused vacation or PTO time when firing an employee, so that will work in your favor, also if it takes you a little while to find a new role you cannot get unemployment pay or benefits if you quit, so getting fired would be better. Also, keep in min just because you give your employer a two weeks notice does not mean the company will let you keep working for that two weeks, a toxic company, and this sounds like one, will just tell you to leave the moment you give your notice, so you would be without that two weeks of pay which could be rough. So, get something lined up before putting your notice to protect yourslf
I think you can respectfully leave if personal finance isn't that much of an issue, but you have to try to do it gently I suppose. You can bring up the conversation and see, but I wouldn't stay somewhere that's so miserable
Been there done that.
Quit if you can afford it, your health is shot, and if staying makes it very challenging to interview. Either way you will get over this setback and find a better opportunity.
The employer gains nothing by firing you because then they’re down resources, this time until end of year is much harder to find candidates willing to leave a job and start a new one in Nov-Dec.
Right now, I’ve noticed it’s taking longer to find a job since there’s more job seekers than openings so it’s riskier now to quit without a job lined up.
Don’t let the fear of firing take over your thoughts. Keep moving forward and connecting to what you want. Remember to be in the present-especially with the fear of getting fired. Shift to the thought that you have a plan and you are moving forward to do what is right and best for you.
As to background checks, rarely employers check to find out reason for leaving. This is because most employers will not provide the reason for leaving. Sometimes lawyers call employers to pose as a reference check to gather info for a defamation lawsuit. So the only info the employer will provide is dates of hire, title, and possibly salary. That’s it.
If they are truly awful people, once you get your offer I wouldn’t owe them the courtesy of two weeks. Email your resignation effective immediately, leave your laptop and badge at your desk and walk out.
It would be wise to stay put for as long as you can in your current position, but only if your mental health can still endure it. Which do you valiue most— having a job or your own wellbeing?
Ride it out untim you have another offer at hand. From then, you can decide if you want to burn bridges or not. You can give notice or you can basically not show up and still get paid until you get fired
How likely is it really that you will be fired?
I stayed at my toxic job until I had something else lined up but tbh I honestly regret it a little bit. I was so burnt out by the toxic culture there and since I didn’t give myself enough time in between I feel like I sometimes still feel a little of the burn out. I probably would have continued to interview a little bit longer if I wasn’t so stressed about wanting to leave so badly - but also depends on how your current company is toxic
Agree with all the above advice, until you sign that offer you should wait
Totally relate!!! Currently working the last 5 days of my 2 week notice and can't wait to be done here!!! The Fintech I work for embodies a culture of toxic positivity.
Made sure I had a new offer before resigning though. Bird in hand and all that😌
