They don’t impact utilization but your losing out on overtime. Log every hour even admin you want full credit for every hour worked
If you do work, you need to log your time. Full stop. It’s how we track everything. Utilization and Overtime being the two main ones, but also at year end - reports are pulled to show if you did recruiting or business development or practice development or whatever else you do. This is the central message everyone gets at onboarding
If you work 60 hours (40 chargeable and 20 admin) but only log the 40 chargeable it looks like you only worked 40 hours. This can screw you in two ways 1) one of your peers are working excessive overtime hours and part of that workload is transferred to you as you’re ‘only’ working 40. 2) at year end both utilization and overtime are metrics shown. You may hit the utilization but look like you’re doing a lot less than your perrs
I’ve always been bad at reporting overtime but I’ve tried to start doing better. I’m sure for years people thought I was working less than I did. It’s just so beat into your head that only chargeable hours matter. I feel like I’m cheating entering in hours in which I only did admin. To anyone in industry that counts as real work so not sure why it’s not easy for me to think of it that way.
Agree 100% with EY2. I’m a partner @ EY and it def shows up in year end reviews—all hours (charge plus OT even if from admin) are evaluated
How is utilization calculated? And then “overtime” hours? I’ve never heard of admin time being important to log to show overtime hours until now.
Right - If anything in your performance reviews mentions internal work, but you have no time charged to internal codes, the committee will think either a) you don’t actually do that work or b) you aren’t adhering to our policies for time reporting. Either way not helpful. I also make sure to hit the out of town travel code whenever I’m traveling; this never shows in a review, but hell yes I’m making sure our systems show I spend 7+ hours each and every week traveling to get to wherever they need me to go
My next question, not including travel time, how many hrs per week of admin time do you guys typically book?
E3- think of it this way “if you were to get hurt while doing the work, would you expect workers comp to cover you? If yes, then why do you have qualms booking your time?” I know workers comp is a bit of a stretch for us desk jockeys. But if you are on the clock doing work you wouldn’t be doing otherwise, be on the clock and charge your time.
