Choose the practice over the firm
You do not do boring PMO. A lot of projects we do are around helping define the technology strategy for a divestiture. Which assets to divest from and how. Whether to go for physical separation on day 1 or not. Again - if you're s&o, you will do something similar in the finance, treasury or HR function. But underlying responsibilities remain similar. You also socialize approach with senior client stakeholders. I won't say you will not do any PMO, but it's a small part of the overall project.

D1 is 100% accurate. You will be doing all boring ass PMO in either M&A.

There is a growing strategy and diligence practice. Lots of PE ODDs, but I've done some really cool CDDs for F500. I spend about 50% of my time in pre-deal, and the other 50% in post when I get too burned out
D4, how long do these engagements generally last and how much say do you have in getting pre-deal vs post-deal projects?
The pre-deal engagements are anywhere from 3-8 weeks, with 4-5 as about average. I would say they make up ~25% of projects, but a significantly smaller portion of revenue bc we often will offer a discount for the downstream work (only applicable to the strategic buyers, not much hope for downstream work with PE/financial buyers). However, if you only want to do pre-deal, you can spend 90%+ of your time there.
Focusing only on pre-deal work is a hard path to partner however due to the smaller $$$.
