TL;DR: bad news. The answer is "not really". Okay so a serious answer is that America doesn't owe you residency if you are not generating value for them and if you are not a citizen. I know that is rude but no other country apart from your home country will allow you to do this either. Second, H1B is conditional on your company sponsoring you, so you either need to stay employed or find another visa. Your options are: 1. Can you take a leave of absence from your company and continue to be H1B active and use the time to travel? I have another working visa type so can't answer this question for H1B but this is something you can find out from the internet. 2. You quit, go travel, and come back to the US on an investment visa and start your company. There are conditions here too - industry your startup is in, amount of capital injection needed, etc. This is also info you can find through Google searches.

Out of status = 2 weeks to leave US. We all live a sad life until GC is in the hands.

My firm is applying for a green card end of the year. But the thought of another 3 years in consulting or the same company churns my stomach

Why not move back to your home country or a country that is more liberal with business PR to start your business? Then traveling won’t be an issue. Living in USA with a visa comes with too many constraints . I want to move out to do exactly what you said, but I am stuck in a comfort zone here and too lazy to put an effort.

Marry rich. He/she will buy you your passport if needed and you can travel forever then!

Yeah you don't know h1b to travel the world

The key question is, are you being sponsored for a green card. If so, I would definitely wait it out. Sucks, but you get that little piece of plastic at the end

In the end you need to figure out what’s right for you. From experience I stayed at a place that was not good for me for 5 years to get my green card. Can’t say It was awesome and not painful, but in retrospect it was worth it to get the green card and ability to own my own destiny. That said this worked for me, doesn’t have to be your path

OP, here’s my advice. Try to move to big tech in a green card eligible role. Generally, big tech (at least, G) there’s no minimum number of years you should have been on their payroll to get GC started and processed. Also, they’re able to accelerate the process (trust me on this one) such that what is a 3 year process could be cut down to say ~1.5 years assuming you’re not from China/India etc

You can do all of that but not on a H1B, unfortunately. You will have to quit, leave the US and do all that on your own. Once you’re done, you’ll have to start again to come to the US. And your green card application, if work sponsored, will be suspended the minute you leave.

^ Analyst 1 - are you a US citizen?

Yep 👋

The guidance apparently is to wait for physical copy of the approval before officially resigning. I’d like to give my firm around two weeks notice and I am scheduled to start on 27th Sept. Thoughts? As usual, radio silence from my EY recruiter.
