There’s no point to a savings account right now. If you have a professionally managed brokerage account, put the money there. It will appreciate.

How are your expenses 100k. Is that a thing (unmarried guys with kids here)

like

HCOL mortgage / taxes can be 60-100k alone.

How much will your expense increase with the new house? Do you have the down payment? Start saving the difference now.

How much time do you realistically need to save up for the difference in purchase price between current and new home? I would try to keep the savings timeline to 2-3 years since you only get a relatively small return on the money. In the first 2-3 years I would divert extra funds to investment of some sort.

I’d put the emergency saving and brokerage both into a broadly diversified 60/40 portfolio. Reasonably conservative and you’ll get a decent return for the (smalllish) risk.

I’ve moved everything but my emergency fund into a brokerage account. I don’t plan on tapping into my savings for another 2-3 years and can make the 0.6% in under 2 weeks via basic trades. If looking at investments outperforming 0.6% than you’ve got a lot of safe options available. I’d also take into account staying above the inflation rate of 2%+ if you’re looking to put money to use.

Have any of you approached your employer for reimbursement for being asked to use your phone at work? Specifically things like texting your boss while they are in court? I started a new job and am trying to set boundaries but this is one that I cannot set as it is standard practice. In our state, an employer must reimburse you if they direct you to use your personal phone for work. It seems petty, but I’m trying to (rightfully) cash in on something that I would rather not have to do.

Down because I got some upsetting (work-related) news yesterday. I was up for promotion and did not get it, basically for my actual job that I have been acting in for over a year. I had perfect reviews and perfect on the technical portion of the interview. Apparently they dinged me on something subjective relating to situational competencies. Colleagues—who I trained and mentored—did receive promotion and we will all be working at the same job, just them at higher level and pay. Contd.

Last year, My girlfriend was making 80k while I was making 200k so I took her out to dinners and took care of the groceries etc. Basically made sure it’s an equitable relationship. She got a new job this year and is now making 210k (more than me) but still expects me to pay for all the dinners and groceries. I’ve already talked to her about this but just resulted in argument. Is there any coming back from this situation to make this equitable relationship or is break up the only option here?
