My mom, brother and I, have been funding a vocational school for older women in Afghanistan that my mom started in 2002. We gave them initial funding for the location, teaching and learning materials, sewing machines and materials and now they are fully self-sufficient. Paying for the building, teachers and materials from what they make at the school! It wasnā€™t even a huge initial investment, all in all $5k over the spans of a decade and women who were never allowed to leave the house or learn to read are now able to write to my mom and are their families bread winners.

I have a large collection of coins, currencies, both rare and errors that I have. But I have never talked about it at work. (Yeah yeah, I know. It is so 1980s)

They asked for money for two cows a few years ago, there a little courtyard in the school, and we also got them cheese making material. Itā€™s not like pasteurized but itā€™s damn good cheese. So they are expanding and looking for entrepreneurial projects on their own. Weā€™ve basically been relegated to foreign cheerleaders at this point.

Mine is the same as EY1. I have done development work for years and miss it.

The other thing is just being a dad. I take my son to all sorts of heavy metal, punk, and classical concerts and always get him up to the barrier by the stage. He has amassed his own Hard Rock Cafe in his bedroom including drum sticks, a drum head, an autographed guitar, autographed posters, and a dozen set lists from his favorite bands. He is usually the only kid in general admission so the bands spoil him. It is so much fun and it gives me so much vicarious enjoyment that I just want to talk about it but I know that nobody else at work really cares.

I gained a very, very high level view of our current human situation (who is in control, how resources are managed, science behind manipulating feelings, etc). Can't share it with anyone because then they either don't believe me and think I'm crazy, or believe me and their entire world falls apart. My conversations now are kept within the boundaries of food, weather, and software applications. I feel so alone.

I worked in international development prior to consulting and it's my passion. I love languages, traveling and trying to make the world a better place. That background doesn't give me credibility in consulting however (its no finance) so don't bring it up much.

Accenture1, is there any way to purchase their products in the US? I know that near Herat there was some work being done to help women make rugs and get around the labyrinthine middle market so the women could keep a larger percentage of the value of the rugs. Some really good work came out of Kansas State or the U of Kansas. What you just posted makes me very happy .

For anyone that moved to the US a bit later in life (early 30s), do you feel like you are financially behind retirement now by United States standards?

My home country offers free health care, education, affordable living etc and now iā€™m in the US the only way I think Iā€™ll ever catch up for retirement is by making Partner salary one day but still living like Iā€™m on a Manager salary to save.

Plus on a visa we cannot have other income. This is going to be a long game of catch up.

Hey, would really like some advice here.

Recently graduated and am looking for full time roles. I've had four different internships, the last two in tech, and I've been doing marketing, specifically Product Marketing and looking for full time roles there. I was recently offered a role as a Product Marketing Associate - the team members sound great and responsibilities sound really up my alley, but they are locked in at 50k. I understand I'm a new grad and all, but is this a low-ball offer?

Hey ladies!
Curious how you would handle this. I got someone close to me a director role at my company. I pulled alot of strings to make this happen.
