I'm a fan of century schoolbook for briefs, memos, and emails, Californian fb for redline comments, and gill sans for PowerPoint and other visual media

Very pretty! I like that one and Garamond but all our docs are Times New Roman so that’s what I stick with for work. I hate the look of sans serif fonts.

like

I also like centry schoolbook, but I rarely use it because it takes up too much space. I almost always end up switching back to times new Roman just to stay within the page limit.

like

I've never seen word counts in state courts, and I don't typically see it in district courts either. My local district court is 15 pages, which is never enough for major motions in complex cases.

Equity for briefs.

Butterick has such great fonts but being in government I'll never get approval to buy them. Best case scenario I'd end up with some comic sans varient that some paper pusher decided was just as good

Just please not Arial.

like

Why not, I only use Ariel :(

I’m Times New Roman loyal for everything but everyone here is kind of inspiring me to branch out.

like

Do it! Matthew butterick is the gold standard in legal typography and made his books free, but don't be afraid to experiment a bit, especially for internal work

Do courts allow fonts other than Times New Roman for briefs?!?! That’s all I’ve ever used.

like

Century schoolbook is common. I practice before several that only require the briefs to be legible.

like

That font is beautiful. I’ll be following your lead

like

TNR is standard, but I love using Century Schoolbook when I can. Georgia is great for letters too.

like

I've been using Georgia as my default font, it's nice to switch it up. I have gotten in trouble before by almost submitting a filling in it because it courts demand TNR for some unholy reason.

I want to buy one of Butterick's fonts but I haven't been able to justify the expense. I have also used Charter which is an awesome serif he recommends and offers for free, and I use cooper Hewitt for presentations which his book recommends.

Garamond ftw

I use century schoolbook a lot. Palatino is my next alternative. Georgia for emails.

like

I hear century schoolbook is easier to read, and times new roman is harder to read because it’s intended as a space-saving font

like

I only use times new Roman
