NOT Brandwatch. It’s awful.
OP - biggest downside is the one you already mentioned: steep learning curve makes it difficult/inaccessible for junior/non-strat teams to use. But they offer a lot of learning resources that we were able to layer into a pretty solid training curriculum. Other downside: Because it is a powerful tool, other teams and/or your clients will think it’s a magic 8 ball. Like, “Hey, can you go ask Crimson how we can sell more [product] to Gen Z?"
@OP - Agreed, the learning curve is very steep with Crimson. Another tool I really like, though it’s more of a content research/content marketing tool than social listening, is BuzzSumo. It’s a fraction of the price and very user-friendly, but definitely not a substitute for something like Crimson
I swear by Netbase and the ability to feed dat into Tableau. crimson is highly overrated.
Interesting, might be useful addition. We use Netbase currently- love it, but am beginning to hear more about IBM Watson for social..
Crimson Hexagon FTW
With Crimson it's about monitors (at least on our contract), if you're doing it for a lot of clients that can impact it, but everything is negotiable, right? 😁
Weighing back in to change my answer: Crimson sucks. After 2 years of their renewal process and massive fee hikes between the different subscription tiers, I can’t take it anymore. Nothing their tool provides is worth the excessive pricing. To those who recommended Netbase and other alternatives: Thank you.
Crimson
I’ve been using Crimson for the last couple years and I’m a pretty big fan of it.
I used to use Crimson and loved it. Feel it has a steeper learning curve than most, but makes up for it in power. My concern is that it'd be too difficult for junior/non-strat team members to use
Crimson
Any downsides to Crimson? I care about not running into query limits, and balancing power/customization with time to create/analyze
Buzzsumo w/ crimson as a backup
I’ve done a lot of vendor searches around this, and Netbase has typically stood out. Absolutely loathed Crimson.
AD1 - I’m intrigued. Can you share more about what you love about Netbase and what you loathe about Crimson?
Crimson was often very slow, the reps took weeks to respond to emails, and the features were pretty standard - nothing standout for a price that could practically hire an entry level employee. Netbase had some unique features, like the ability to geo-listen, and it was really fast. In general, I don’t think most listening tools are worth the steep price given the accuracy of the sentiment analysis swings so much that it’s essentially worthless, it mostly pulls from Twitter (who uses Twitter anymore), and FB/IG don’t allow much API access. Plus, most people aren’t very forthright on social media with their true opinions and beliefs...hello 2016 election. I’m a big fan of Google Trends since search behaviors provide a much more honest look into a given subject.
@havas1 what don't you like about Brandwatch? I've always had a good impression of them.
@GWI There’s nothing Brandwatch can do that any other tool can’t. Slow, very lagged, no tuner, takes forever to run queries, no automation algorithm like Brightview, horrible demographic information, the list goes on and on.
Crimson now, but I loved Sysomos too
