Anyone working as a 1099 employee?
I'm looking to find a job like the Forward Deployed Engineer role Palantir Technologies in the UK.
I have become hooked on finding a job that involves solving the kinds of problems they presented during their interviews. Although I got to the final round my performance anxiety got the better of me (I think I wanted the job a bit too much...). I will reapply after working in a similar company.
Is it "deep tech" / "data science" or "smart enterprise" that they're doing? Any advice welcome.
Any1 here
Who are moving to Portugal ?

This is probably more specific than you’re looking for, but for musicians Crown Station in Noda has open mic jam band nights on Tuesdays. Stage calls up musicians that have never played together for a 7 min set of unrehearsed music. Pretty cool if you’re into the underground music scene. Take your instrument and hop up on stage if you’re feeling froggy.
Small town feel with big city amenities. Still kinda affordable housing, really good restaurants and breweries and traffic is fine. Also, pretty close to the lakes, beaches and mountains
EY6, congrats on that, but to my point, I said single. Additionally, a dual-income household in tech and consulting it far from the average “per-capita wage/salary income” of the majority of residents in Charlotte. The median household income in Charlotte is $65k. Your combined income with your spouse is probably no less than $200k on the low end.
We’re good if you don’t like it and ya leave. We’ve got enough people
Haha we all love a good Deloitte burn 🔥
Agree with small city feel, big city amenities. I'd add that to maximize this, you want to move to the suburbs. I grew up in Davidson - with access to the Whitewater Center, Lake Norman, and trails like Fisher Farm. Loved the folksy feel and sense of community, just needed something bigger, and now I'm in Manhattan.
NYC has the big city amenities on steroids, but you miss easy access to nature, people waving at you to say hello even though you've never met before, and little things like that. Some people don't care about stuff like that, and they are all in for the big city amenities, but if the question is what is your favorite part about Charlotte, I'd say it's little things; like the culture and community.
100 percent. People are a little too nice ha.
Agree with the big but small city feel. Proximity to beach / mountains. Growth potential.
Another one for small town feel with big city amenities.
Major airport
Pro sports
We get major tours - concerts, Broadway shows, etc.
Close to lots of nature
Lots of jobs with big city pay (especially in banking)
Best part is that we can actually access this stuff. You want tickets, just buy them. Traffic actually moves too. It was a hassle to go enjoy some of the amenities when I lived in DC.
I love the mild weather
Honestly kind of sucks here, lack of identity, pretty vanilla, not much appreciation for culture or art. Not a foodie place, travel to Asheville or other cities for that. There’s a good ol boys southern vibe that lingers. Not the best airport, tough to get direct international flights. Go to DC or Atlanta for that. Why am I still here? Don’t worry, I’m working on it.
I’m working on leaving too in a year or so. I moved here to be closer to help out with some living situations with aging family members, but I’m quickly finding that Charlotte is a rather “flat” city. I get weird looks from locals when I tell them I walk <0.5 miles to the Publix in Southend to go grocery shopping or similarly do UberEats or Grubhub food pickups instead of deliveries. And while CLT has a big airport given the AA presence, the lack of airline competition makes flights to anywhere ungodly. It should not cost $600 RT to go to Florida during the off-season. 🤦♂️
Too many breweries
Small city, affordable, and lots of gyms. Close to mountains and beaches.
I think there’s a lot of gyms. Love mine, I go to Edge Performance. Grungy warehouse type.
Probably lamelo ball
Car scene / breweries I guess
I do love the breweries. They can be so much fun.
Is it walkable or need a car ?
Cycling and also transit is a joke. I live in Southend and the CATS light rail trains only run every 20 min (30 min during late evenings) making it a rather unreliable form of transit. I was dismayed to hear that the Silver Line to CLT airport, if it even comes to fruition, would be operating in like yr 2037. SMH.
While there are some bike lanes, definitely not enough where they need to be to easily traverse different parts of the city. And don’t get me started on walking as a pedestrian. So many sidewalks are currently closed off for construction, and even the few that aren’t seem too narrow (e.g., Morehead St or College). Also, drivers run through red lights far too frequently. Oy vey… 😔
Nothing
I was born here and am still trying to figure out the hype. This city sucks and the only reason I live here is to save money.
Winters, but the city itself is more for families with kids. Going to move to Chicago in 2023.
Only good thing is accessibility. Maneuvering around the city is easy. Other than that, go somewhere else because you’ll end up doing the same thing over and over again here.
This feels about right lol
Good music scene, good weather, affordable, accessible and always something going on. Small town feel and a variety of vibes depending on where you go, which keeps it interesting
