My 2.5-year-old boy loves puzzles, play-doh, and anything he can use outside (shovels, water table, chalk). I’ve heard that a lot of kids my son’s age enjoy magnatiles, but my son hasn’t ever played with them.
My son is 3 and loves dinosaurs.. he’s loved them since he was about 1. We’ve ordered all sorts of Jurassic world Dinos that are more realistic and reasonably priced, and also a 12 pack of 7 inch Dinos made by Prextex that get used everyday. Pair that with a fun book and you’re good to go. Playskool also has Rescue Bots that do transform but are made for smaller hands .. they’re like $15 each and there are 4 main characters. Paw patrol pups and their vehicles have been a hit too. We also do a lot of puzzles.
Magformers - my kids have gotten years of fun from them.
My guy is obsessed with trains. Loves the wooden tracks and a wind up train. He also loves books and dress up toys. 50 bucks will get you a lot of stuff. Maybe ask the parents what he is into. For us, if it has nothing to do with trains, he will not use it

My boy loves golf... get some plastic golf clubs and let him get creative with making holes out of cans , bottles, cartons ...
