I know someone who I went undergrad together is also undocumented, he’s very smart, kind and hard working.

I like dropping that I went to community college
I went too 🥺♥️
Okay not trying to judge and be super open about and have an honest conversation. But I am an immigrant as well, moved here when I was 18 but no illegally. It costed my family so much money and time and some personal embarrassment due to the strict immigration procedures. So when I hear about ilegal immigrants I can’t help but to feel some resentment. You know? Like I understand they come here because things at home might be so bad, that they risk being ilegal in such a strong/strict/powerful country. But idk, it rubs me off the wrong side
This is an awesome thread, you guys are both great

Thank you! I am to spread information, the world has enough hate as it is.
Can I ask why you didn’t seek documentation (or if you did, why you didn’t get it)? Not looking to judge, just curious why.

OP you also were lucky that back then the US govt didn’t track immigrants as much as they do now. I came to the US as a foreign student some 25 years ago and recall how many loopholes were being used by many. Back then Social Security Administration would issue a SS card to all visitors to the US and some states would issue DL’s just on the basis of a foreign passport and foreign DL or Intl Driver License. Heck even bank accounts and credit cards were easily issued to visitors. Lastly, as you stated most illegal immigrants stay within their ethnic communities which gives them cover. The same is true today, though the US government has made it quite difficult to survive as an illegal immigrant and continue to make it harder.

Are you white? Reason I ask is that changes people’s perspectives as they only think of Hispanics as undocumented people only. Knew a few Irish illegals in Boston!

Nope, South Asian

A coworker of mine was a DACA kid. Never knew for a while because they never talked about it. Also one of the best and smartest coworkers I had the pleasure of working with.

Thanks for sharing your story and I am glad you and your family are here.
Best one I’ve heard..you weren’t born here? But you don’t even have an accent?! Yeah I missed that part on my birth certificate/immigration form that said, “do you want an accent when becoming a citizen?”
Surprised that to see that so many haven’t interacted with illegal immigrants! I also come from a community where my parents and friends were illegal. I was born here
Did your family consider other countries? Which aspects made the US the better choice than other countries, even without proper documentation?

Community for sure. South Asians moved here heavily after the immigration act of 1965, so it became a natural destination spot to start over.
OP- love that you are being open in this thread and fighting so others can have the privilege. I feel like a lot of young people are outraged about things that are broken, but won’t actually dedicate time to fixing them.
Hi OP, two questions for you: where should we draw the line when it comes to immigration? Do you believe that everyone should be allowed to come in?

Hey! Totally missed this, I apologize.
First off, thank you for the respectful wording. I think you ask some great questions, and the pleasant structure of them make me much more eager to have this conversation.
Question 1 - I think that answer depends on what you mean by immigration. If you mean legal, I think we need massive expansion of this effort. Immigrants have been proven to open businesses, be reliable workers, and provide clear stimulation to the economy. They are a clear net gain. Right now, we have an administration that is clearly trying to keep people out in an effort to “put their citizens first”. I disagree with that statement, because keeping out immigrants actually HURTS the US economy. Now if you mean undocumented immigrants, I think that if you set up a fair system & staff immigration offices to the full extent they need, you’ll see undocumented immigration greatly fall. Once there’s a new system in place, I’d have reevaluate the hypothetical scenario.
For Q2 - I won’t spend too long on this. I think it’s really more a philosophical debate on the meaning of borders. To me, being born outside some arbitrary lines shouldn’t prohibit you from crossing said line into a different country. That being said, I know the economic and cultural impacts of open borders, but to me the humanity of the situation always comes first. I guess to answer your question- I think anyone who is willing to work & contribute to the American economy should be allowed in. How that’s determined is a discussion for another day.
Man I admire you for openly mentioning this in the work place. Also grow up illegal and barely anyone knows except a few close friends. Could never imagine telling coworkers and getting the judgement

Yep a ton. We even opened up multiple businesses and became one of the largest providers of employment opportunities in the communities we based ourselves in.

Old friend of mine is a US based Canadian exec of a MNC who was here illegally from ~2010-2016. She had to move back to Canada in early 2016, but I believe she's back in the US legally now.
No clue why why she didn't go through the proper channels the first time around, it certainly wasn't a matter of not having the resources to go through the proper channels or not being able to work at her firm legally, since she came to the US in ~2010 from her firm's Canadian HQ and went back there from 2016-2018 before returning to the US legally in 2018. 🤷♂️
I personally enjoy saying im Mexican and they see a tall, slim, white looking woman.
