Anyone have a good entry for when you’re just talking to another attorney about the case while working up the litigation strategy? Best I’ve got is “legal conference in office and continued development of litigation strategy”

3L class of 2020 (RIP my graduation ceremony). I was wondering how you all keep yourself organize with these.

Do you keep template descriptions on hand for future work? Like if you write a description you really like, do you use that as a template to customize for each matter? Is that just in a Word doc or something?

like

I keep a running Word Doc of these organized by task; the billing software my firm uses doesn’t have models but that does sound ideal.

Draft [statement of facts OR legal arguments] for [client’s name]’s summary judgment motion in [case name]. [(start and end times of drafting motion)]

Review of correspondence from opposing counsel in preparation of legal conference

Let me ask, at what point, when communication isn’t being returned, do you just go ahead and do the thing you’re inquiring/asking?

I’m fed up with communicating like a mad man to have nothing returned and then painted like a bad person/employee for not having work done.

Anyone having a horrible time meeting billable targets during quarantine? I haven’t been able to focus at all. Want to get the perspective of younger attorneys. We’re a 4-attorney firm (2 partners, one associate, one OC) looking to add a 5th attorney. I left a mid-sized litigation firm on the East Coast where I was a partner to open my own firm. Decision was driven by quality of life. We are a civil lit firm. We don’t have billing requirements per se. We have expectations, but we’re reasonable - big on flexibility & quality of life. What are young associates looking for when evaluating job opportunities?

Hey Everyone!

Next Thursday, 1/27, we'll be having a live text-based Q&A in here all day with Tony Thai, CEO of Hyperdraft, on exiting Big Law.

Any and all questions are welcome regarding leaving Big Law to go in-house or non-traditional, starting your own venture, avoiding burnout, or really anything you want to ask!

A thread will be dropped in the morning, and close at the end of the workday. Tony will be available and popping in all day to answer your questions.

Cheers,

Team Fishbowl

Notice etiquete question. If you give your 2 weeks’ notice on a Monday, is your last day a Monday (2 weeks later) or can it be the previous Friday? Does your answer change depending on the time (morning/ afternoon) notice is given?

If I don’t want to potentially burn any bridges, should I just have my notice period end on a Monday and just take that day out of my scheduled vacation before starting my next job?

First time giving notice - would be interested in hearing what others have done.
