Feel like there is so much to know in tax and I don’t feel I know enough. Do ppl read tax stuff on their free time? Just feeling overwhelmed

Yes, your never going to know everything in your field and that’s ok! Read up when you see something unusual, subscribe to the tax adviser, ask questions, etc. Relax, your good and not alone bud!

I build in a half hour before work most days to read at least one short article in my field. It isn’t easy to do so but you would be surprised how many times I’ve had a client issue come up and then think “wow I remember reading something that is relevant to this.”

like

I love when I’m listening to an EY webcast and two mins into it I’m thinking “what the hell are they talking about?? And how in the world do they even know this stuff???” Then I’m grateful I work with so many smart people! 😄

Read the updates that your firm or external resources provide when you can. Book an hour every week on your calendar so that you actually do it. But also remember that you will never know everything especially depending how broad your tax responsibilities are. Also if you work for a firm that has people who are designated SMEs for certain areas utilize them as a resource when you need more information about something.

One thing that helps is reading memos from the client you are working on. The memos usually site IRC code sections and other relevant tax issues with that client and industry. Helps me a ton.

Agreed this is super helpful even if seems intimidating

Find the people to ask your dumb questions, in your area and specialty areas. Also a tax senior, google is a great resource. When I was an associate I’d just get the flavor from any site. Now I try to actually look up the code (thank you Cornell law!) or read perspectives from all the firms on topics when available. Obviously internal webcasts and materials are great but nothing beats other people. Just know there’s no way to know everything about the tax code and do your due diligence when you xan

Second that, that’s why you have teams! 😋

I feel like what's important is knowing just enough to know who to talk to and when. The stuff I pay most attention to are my own specialty, and I just make sure to know enough to know, "if I happen to see x, I need to know to ask y about it."

like

Don’t be afraid to ask a million questions!! No one will be annoyed with you and if they are you gotta switch teams up

like

Completely agree. But yes, read on your free time anything you don’t know much about. Helps a ton.

I'm a big fan of know what you know and outsource what you don't. I've made really good relationships with my GCR, ITS compadres. SALTY person here😁

I read on my phone before going to bed instead of aimlessly scrolling through Instagram and Facebook

I’m a creative in Europe. My creative output has been consistent and I have been lucky enough to have won a bunch of awards at the big shows. All is well. But somehow I keep on feeling the urge to relocate to the USA to work on a bigger scale, and to feel the thrill of a new challenge. I have some opportunities over there, actually. Are there any Europeans working in the USA right now? In which way is it different? Do you make less stuff? Which cities are recommended? Any advice would be great.
