Feeling like consulting isn’t the best career for me b/c of the lifestyle and I met someone who I hate being apart from every wk. But I always wanted to reduce gender gap, so I feel conflicted/guilty.

You’re going to have an impact and reduce the gender gap in almost any industry unfortunately. I understand and relate to wanting to pave the way/make it easier for future women but it still has to be fulfilling for you. Don’t feel guilty. That said, even if you were in a local job, you might work long hours and not be able to spend quality time with people during the week. So if you’re thinking of leaving partially due to a relationship, I’d definitely give it time and make sure it’s the right decision for you independent of other factors (and also make sure the relationship itself is worth it).

Great point about having an impact in other industries outside of consulting! And yes, I think you’re right to give it plenty of time before making a big decision. Need to be sure I’m not just feeling this way because of a couple of projects and specific circumstances. Thanks for the advice!!!

Understand this completely. But please don’t sacrifice your happiness based on other people’s expectations! Hold on to what is making you a better, more wholesome person, and discard those things that aren’t. Including this job

Finding someone who is worth your time is a great gift. Most people don’t have it. And I completely understand the feeling, life is pretty with them. Few things to consider when you think of a change- 1- is the distance making the heart fonder? 2-how long have you felt this? 3-is anyone forcing you or is this more what you want? 4-is there a possibility to be on local projects at least sometime during the year? 5-how long have you been doing what you’re doing? Do you love it? Based on above, I’d say love is important and you can love your work and your personal life. Don’t sacrifice your life for others. Pave the way wherever you are. We can support women in different ways. Just don’t make an impulsive decision, and there are always more options than visible to the eyes.

Love this! Thank you!!!

Can you find a firm/location with more local options? In my market, I’ve only had to travel on 10% of my projects because many clients are down the street

like

Maybe! I think I’m still evaluating whether it’s really the lifestyle that I’m not loving or if it’s the type of work. Haven’t done anything other than consulting so I think I also have a little bit of career FOMO

Think about slalom. Local model has not only given me work life balance, its changed who I am as a person (less entitled, less mean, when I'm not 200% util and 100% traveling)

Take some time to find (via LinkedIn or other networks) women who are 10+ years out from consulting or McKinsey - ask them to coffee and that you’re just looking to learn about their career path. It will make it clear that there are a TON of badass women in other industries, companies big and small, making huge differences!

Once you’re in the relationship long enough, seeing each other once a week is doable. I appreciate LDR for giving me space to grow and a greater appreciation for seeing my S/O when I can! :)

Definitely a great point, especially in my relationship because my boyfriend is super introverted and I’m super extroverted, so it’s probably healthy for us to have some time apart each week :)

How do you deal with non-accepting family members? I don’t make it a thing, but I’ve been advised to take off my tie and change into more feminine clothing around them. I am okay with not discussing my personal life, but I don’t feel comfortable changing my dress. So I just don’t keep in contact with those relatives. A therapist told me that I am not secure in my gender identity if I am not willing to take off a tie and show compassion to a family member who would be upset by it? Am I selfish?

If you are not a partner, do any of the Big 4 have a mandatory retirement age? I have a friend who is working in industry and has been approached by a few firms as he has a very desirable technical skill set. He is in his 50's and doesn't want to make a move unless there is some runway to keep working. He basically could work as long as he wants where he is at. The pay increase would be significant for him to jump to but if he is mandatorily forced out in a few years it might not be worth it.
