Feeling like I want to switch from audit to tax because I have a newborn at home and I don’t want to travel anymore. I really love public accounting and don’t want to leave it. Any thoughts?

You won’t spend more time at home if you are in tax. You might not have to travel but you’ll be working insane busy season hours.

Do you have to work? Serious question. If not the rewards of taking a year or two off to be with your newborn child from dusk till Dawn are incalculable. I highly recommend it of you can.

Don't. I'm serious. You'll regret the move your whole life. Tax is always tax and exist opportunities are so limited. I was in tax for 2 years and transferred internally to audit. At least in audit if your portfolio is all calendar year end clients, you have 1 busy season. While in tax you'll have 2 long busy seasons that are brutal and face the same people every single day of the year.

I’m EY Tax and I wholeheartedly disagree with EY1and EY2. Tax is a big spectrum and some seriously great positions exist here. I work from home 2-4 days per week, for example. If you’re a good senior/manager, you can get away with working remotely a LOT (in the best case, 100%). That doesn’t exist in audit. Oh yeah plus we make more money than audit

Ha ha the hours in tax will kill you. You'll never see your baby working in tax.

Can you switch into an internal role ie, business development/strategy/marketing? Do you enjoy tax? Can you request to be on in-town clients? What advisory service lines are hiring in your office? Do you have experience with data analytics?

Tax person here and I confirm the above statement is true 😂 I spent 15+ hours a day in the office during busy season

I’m in a very small market and a small office, so there are no internal positions available and I was told that my position cannot be no travel. My husband’s job requires nights, and we don’t have family in town, so out of town travel would require us to find childcare from 11 am to 1 am for multiple nights while I’m away. My office allows us to work from home during evenings and weekends, so while I may have to work later nights, it feels worth it. I did one busy season in tax; I enjoyed the work, but I liked the client interaction and the ownership of my audit work better. I do know have experience with data analytics, but probably not as experienced as someone from a larger office with more sophisticated clients.

Maybe I just have to suck it up and go private. It’s just a shame, because I really like my office and I like the variety of multiple clients.

I'd you're at a regional firm you might want to consider the move. They can have more flexibility in tax compared to what I see at EY

I work 100% from home. Busy season does suck, but I only work about 65 hours. I’m going to go part-time, maybe 80%, to make it more manageable. It is annoying that I missed every spring break and we can never take a trip because spring break falls before 4/15 (14/15 years my kids were in school). I started out in audit (4 years) and then took off two years and started back in tax with seasonal work.

EY3, working from home aspect is so much dependent on the office culture. As for the salaries, they used to differ but not anymore. When I transferred to audit, my tax partner told me that I'm lucky as last year leadership of the firm decided to make both service lines (Tax and Audit) about the same long run.

I had a difference of $400 more a year than my audit peers at the time, and so it wasn't worth adjusting.

All depends on what you do in tax. I’m in a specialty group and have some flexibility with my hours. Doesn’t mean I don’t work a ton, but I can work from home a lot, especially at night, and every week is different.
