(1) Small firm, 15 attorneys. (2) Washington, DC (3) Whatever the heck I ask for. First time was only 6 weeks because I was a first time mom, and frankly by week 6, I was very ready to get back to work. But my body had just barely healed. I'd probably ask for 8 next time, but I'm sure I could ask for more if I wanted. (4) No other policies. No formal parental leave policy, as the firm is pretty young. But I feel empowered to ask for what I want/need.

I can’t speak to that, but salute you for being brave enough to parent and forge ahead with work and career dreams, not to mention earning with home duties. I recently spoke with someone who compromised and is now looking to retirement with so much regret and resentment.

There are lots of surveys out there in this. Most likely your firm is outdated as most firms are. https://www.law.com/americanlawyer/2021/05/11/many-law-firm-family-leave-programs-still-ignore-the-modern-family/

1) 85-90 attorney firm (over 100 pre-COVID) 2) Chicago, IL 3) mid-COVID we circulated a new policy that provides time based on time served: 1-4 years: 6 weeks paid 4 years plus: 8 weeks paid Shareholders: 10 weeks paid 4) Attorneys must have billed a minimum of 1250 hours in the preceding 12 months to qualify. Leave is only offered to “birth of a child” and no other qualifying event (adoption, etc.). A 2 week paid parental leave is offered if one adopts or their spouse gives birth.

Thank you for sharing this information! Do you know whether the pay is in addition to state disability/family leave pay or whether your employer closes the gap (i.e., if you make $10000/mo and state pays $3000 during leave, then your employer pays $7000 to make you “whole”)?

1. 35-40 attorneys 2. Minneapolis, MN 3. 12 weeks Must have worked at the firm for a year, otherwise no other requirements/policies. We also have 6 week paid parental leave for adoptive parents or the non-birthing parent.

(1) 600+ attorneys (2) Detroit metro area (3) 18 weeks (4) amp up and down. And honestly, I won't even try to hit my hours for the year of my next leave. I only want 2 kids and I don't want to stress out about it like I did with my first. Life's too short, I want to enjoy my 2nd baby and enjoy every day of leave.

I’m in second trimester. I just came from my grandfather’s funeral, outside. My aunt was around her 2 siblings last week that had Covid and she hasn’t been vaxed. She hugged me and mom (4 weeks from her last chemo session) and only told us about her siblings after. I’m so mad. I guess I’m just venting but the potential complications for the baby, me, and my mom make me worry. Any comforting words?

I had a baby right before covid started and all of 2020 was spent struggling tremendously. I wore myself out and stretched myself out too thin . Does anyone else find it difficult to ask for time off? I haven’t taken a “vacation day” since February, billed 185+ hour months consistently through the pandemic (exceeded hours for 2020 bonus eligibility), and am feeling pretty burnt out. Can any at will employer adjust your salary unilaterally like we’ve seen done at several firms this year?
