Looking for Technical Writer West Coast
Holy shit I hate writing scripts. That is all.
Lynda has great tutorials, 1000% recommend, and most big agencies have free subscriptions with your company email. I’m about 90% proficient in photoshop but have been self taught since i got my first pirated copy when i was 14
I learned indesign to proficiency on Lynda in ~7 hours over a single weekend last year, it’s not hard to use at all, but some of the keyboard shortcuts are different, which was the only thing that was hard to get used to
Learned about 70% of premiere with youtube videos, most 20-30 minute crash courses on youtube will get you started pretty quick
I can’t do illustrator for the life of me, but I also know nothing about layout and design principles
I can click on the icon in the dock. After that I am lost. If they are asking you to art direct comps, ask for an additional art director salary.
I can do most comps, just lack drastically in speed compared to ADs. There are a million YouTube videos, just search whenever you run into something you don’t know how to do.
InDesign is super simple once you get the hang of it
It’s really stupid you have to have those. But they are essential. If I were a young Copywriter I would learn them and get proficient.
Man, you guys would have loved the old days. Come up with one brilliant campaign and you’d be shooting commercials for the next 6 months.
Thanks for the feedback everyone! Taking an indesign course on Lynda as we speak.
Is this something I should know how to do? I expected this thread to be filled with writers saying “I have close to no proficiency in photoshop.”
Depends on your aspirations. Do you aspire to be an ACD? A CD? Because the good ones can speak well to both.
Indesign is great and I have a lot more confidence in that vs my photoshop skills (except for simple asks). The biggest thing (like said above) is speed to get things done. But I’ve learned a ton just from YouTube! We used Lynda in college and I took two design classes then too. General assembly and Skillshare also have some great how to courses. It’s a super valuable skill if you’re ever comping on your own!
I’m behind the curve with design skills and can’t seem to find the time to learn with kids. If you have the time now, use it!
I don’t even have the programs on my computer...
I didn't go to portfolio school so I had to be my own AD at first. I'm pretty handy with Photoshop out of pure necessity and really enjoy making comps to free up my partner. YouTube was / is great resource. I could search something very specific and, sure enough, there's an YouTube tutorial for it.
If you can get photoshop down, indesign will make more sense since many of the tools/principles are the same.
The good old days.
Honestly, I’d learn some coding g before I’d learn Photoshop these days. Some CSS and JavaScript goes a long way. It’s a digital world.
