I’m at a mid-size litigation firm (mostly med mal defense) and really like it, but the pay is a bit low. My background check is taking a long time (it’s been over a week), and so I haven’t been able to put in my two week notice. I also want 1-2 weeks off before starting my new job. How do I ask to delay my start date (especially when I don’t know when the background check will clear)? Or should I just take the risk and put in my notice now?

It recently came to my attention that I’m billing significantly more than is strictly required of me and also more than the attorneys are required to bill (and what they actually bill lol). Any books/self help materials for someone who is constantly worrying (and waste a lot of unnecessary time)? E.g. No matter if i pass or fail an interview, there is always something to worry about. The worrying/anxiety multiplies when I proceeded further in the interview stages. Now that I signed the offer and is pending background checks, my anxiety is off the roof as it itches closer to my starting date.

My boyfriend's father passed away and his mom wants to live with us "temporarily". She currently lives in a different city and is going to move.

I do love her and we get along. I've flown over multiple times to support the family and do what I can to help (clean house, run errands, coordinate with funeral home).
