Fellow runners - I’ve been running 3-4x per week at about a 20-25 mile/week for the past year or so.

My questions: (1) does it make sense to take a week off and let myself rest or do other workouts (i.e. cycling) and (2) I’ve been running with the same shoes since August last year - make sense to get new ones?

Yes to both.

I'm not a runner though. I just consult people for a living.

How do you run so much and not have shin splints or stress fracture problems? This has been a problem for me for a long time, i have to rest at least once a week to help with the pain, or wear compression sleeves over my shins

I mostly focus on stretching after runs, making sure to build in recovery runs and even doing a cool down walk after each run so I’m not immediately sitting or inactive. I’ve made minor stuff come up, but nothing major so far thankfully.

You def need new shoes if you’re getting that much mileage

like

Bcg1 depends on your weight, gait, and shoes. I like the Clifton for long runs but it is 300 miles at best while I can get over 400 on ghosts.

If your running 20-25 miles a week you should get new shoes every 3-4 months

#1 - it depends on your goals and what you enjoy. Generally speaking having a bit of cross-training and other workout types will strengthen body parts running does not ultimately preventing overuse injuries. It also also a good idea to periodize your running so you aren’t doing same distance and pace all the time. Eg - run weeks of 25-25-30 miles then cutback 1 week to 15 and do cross training. Then within the week some easy days some harder days. #2 - I’ve run a few thousand miles per year for over a decade now and find my shoes start to give out around 500 miles. I keep a few in rotation so that I don’t wear the same one day after day

smart

Take time off to assess and correct your biomechanics. Considering how much you are running you’ll want to make sure you aren’t causing your body damage by doing something that you think is just keeping you healthy. Take a look at Functional Patterns and their online course. It’s relatively cheap and is a MASSIVE investment in keeping your body working properly and pain-free.

I found a company I was really excited about working at. I applied for the job and went through 5 rounds of interviews. At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!

Are there any books or resources for helping kids who get bullied?
My 7 yr old nephew has a small frame compared to his same aged or younger friends. This maybe because he is a dec born kid, so compared to kids in his class he is the youngest. He has been facing a lot of bullying from his friends. They throw away things he may like, or try to break his newly gifted watch or hit him. His parents (my sis and bro in law) are great parents btw. So they are also looking for ways to help him.
