Fellow students, what kind of jobs do you have now? I recently got promoted to project engineer and looking back on how much I worried about grades it all seems so silly now

Now I am a quality control manager in my company, your message made me think of those moments and everything that died for my qualifications made me laugh, thank you.

I am currently starting my job, I have been graduating as an industrial engineer for months, and I have to say that I got the job thanks to my qualifications so it still doesn't seem silly to me hahaha.

Today after 6 years I am a trained field engineer, I love what I do and I really wasn't very good in college, much of what I have achieved I have done because I had an opportunity and I have exploited it all this time.

I have a degree as a mechanical engineer for 3 years and today I am in charge of maintenance of the machines of a bread factory where I have been working for 1 year, the road has not been easy but I always think about the stress I had at university and I say that I can with everything hahaha.

I hadn't thought about that, but really, I can only look back and enjoy my life. I love what I did before and I love what I do now, it's funny how sometimes things that marked us with stress can make us laugh like that.

I am a petroleum engineer and today I am the head of a drill, which is something quite difficult to achieve. I had very good grades in my studies, but that was not what brought me here. Fieldwork is very different and is not taken into account as much. your academic performance if not rather the experience you acquire and the adaptability to which you are open.

Lead R&D engineer. I had some stuff drag me down in college. Family members passing for the first time, relationship issues, and so on. All the regular stuff, but it was hard for me to deal with. I had a year where I was seriously depressed and almost failed out of school, lost my full ride scholarship. I basically had a year that I didn't get any credit. Went from a 3.8 to 2.7, 2.1, 0.9 and a 1.3; the Dean of my school called a meeting with me, and basically said depression shouldn't have anything to do with schoolwork. I started meeting with a really good psychologist, guy had pancreatic cancer and changed my life. I turned it around, 3.3, 3.8, 4.0 and 4.0 to finish out my time at school. I thought I was going to be dead in the water, but landed at an aerospace company.

MEP Project Manager, was average in college, always had a 2.5 gpa. I prioritized working throughout college, and I think that’s what helped to set me apart from my peers in the long run.

I’ve been in the federal consulting space for the past 6 years, with 9+ YOE overall. I’m so burned out from federal consulting. Our clients have such a low bar to clear themselves and are checked out most days. Our work is measured mostly through vanity metrics that don’t consider impact or innovation at all. I’m thinking a jump to commercial consulting could offer a much needed break in both compensation and challenging, meaningful work, but don’t know what firms or roles to target.

What is the most useful technical or soft skills for any mechanical engineer to have where you work? I’m curious to know what really matters for everyone and what makes a big impact on the team and business.

Specifics if you can; CAD tools, simulation, CAD speed or proficiency, industry or standards knowledge, GD&T, certifications, Microsoft Excel, presentation skills, technical writing, project management, self organization, great communication, teaching ability, relationship building, etc.

I have started my first job as a software developer and I really enjoy it.
Question is… Is it worth doing Masters degree in computer science? (Part-time)
Would it make a difference in salary/knowledge?
Just wondering if it is worth investing my time into it.
