Female here. Had a female client berate me and undermine my role in front of the whole team. What is it with some women find joy in belittling other women??

Yeah I met some nasty people when I was at client sites. That's why I decided to do internal projects only, people in internal projects are jut a tad better so far. People in person during work act like robots and say weird responses like that OP. I am glad you are vocalizing it somewhere because i think a lot of people my be feeling the way you feel but keep it to themselves. Also, i joined acenture thinking they would have a lot of women, since they spread news on it a lot but whenever I went on a project it turns out that I am the only woman each time. It got draining. Then I thought to myself of course accenture has a lot of women because its such a huge global company, so they can say that easily but if you see each smaller project, its still male dominated and just like any other tech company.

I have been thinking, we have all these women organizations at workplaces, which is great and all but i think companies should start creating men organizations as well and focus on rewiring their brains about treating women. Because I feel like men are still OVER dominating in the workplace and they need to be educated on women issues as well, I feel like society has engrained in them to treat women differently. We can make as many women groups as possible and help ourselves and all but the root of the problem is still sitting in men I think. Mostly men are higher level as well. There needs to be some type of group for Men to educate themselves, we keep leaving them out. Some brave man needs to start this, I think its looked down upon in society for men to have support groups or something because they need to seem "independent macho" but that's just absurd. We are all humans and need to be educated as much as possible.

I read the spirit of the OP to be more along the lines of "this shouldn't happen in general to anyone, but feels even worse because the client should understand first-hand how additionally harmful this is to the perception of a woman in a leadership role"

I am not saying that and I'm not out to be the defender of the universe. I am airing an opinion based on what I have seen from my perspective as a woman

like

So are you saying it's okay for a male client or a male superior berate and undermine a male consultant in front of the team?

like

I don't care how awful this sounds... I'm a female, and my worst experiences with my directors have been when I worked for females (the women my level and below are awesome), but the females in leadership have been HORRIBLE (and mostly just to the women on the team, not the men). It feels so cut throat and so unnecessary. At least one positive came out of it though - I learned exactly the type of manager/director I will never be. I build my associates up.

like

I think it's simply more noticeable when a woman does it.

like

Maybe it's not about sex. Maybe she does the same to males.

like

Well i think men do it as well...any bad person would do it. But it's sad to see women doing to women because there aren't that many women in the IT or consulting workplace from the first place and we should encourage each other. I used to be an advocate for Women in Tech in undergrad but once I joined the IT consulting firm, I realized women are so rude and mean to other women or to myself that I lost passion in advocating women pretty quick. Everyone is just in it for themselves. Its a rat race, no one cares for another.

like

Ugh I hate that quote. It's not about looking out for other women, it's about not targeting other women

like

I feel you OP. It's obviously not with every woman, but I've only ever had women undermine my role. And it's obnoxious and hard to navigate with clients (and superiors, in my case)

like

I'm a guy and I had a female client ask me to get sugar for her coffee in a room full of people and she didn't realize how rude it was until someone called her out. I think some people just lack social intelligence

like

I'm a female- and I am all for women empowerment etc. BUT women tend to go on a power high. Sometimes women treat others like PERSONAL assistants, where as it's (in my experience) less likely with a male manager

like

Sadly, I have seen women not support other women more often than not. Women face so many barriers for success and it's disheartening to see women each other like this.

like

I know what you mean OP. Sometimes, women have to be tougher to prove themselves, and if you have a female who likes to berate other females, it can be a difficult situation to be in. I always make it a point to encourage female colleagues, and be respectful. Women know the issues we face, and should be conscious of treating each other with respect and kindness.

like

I feel like some folks are just a**holes, sure, but ignoring what multiple women specifically report as their experience is silly to me.

like

I'm the only female in my team and my confidence took a hit

like

I mean I had mostly male managers and they treated me like a 2nd class citizen as a female. I have my first woman manager presently and she is so nice to me, shes the nicest manager I ever had. So its NOT only women, men have been much worse in my situation. People just need to chill out and treat each other with respect no matter what level they're on

like

OP don't let it hurt your confidence. Realize that this is an internal problem within the people youre meeting, its not you, its them, they are probably sad people when they go home.

like

Meanwhile none of the guys came to my rescue or said a word. One pinged me later to say he thought the client's outburst was unnecessary. Jeez! you think

like

A5, men may not berate women commonly, but they will do things like talk over you, take over and interrupt, argue and try to correct, or just ignore you. I don't see many men doing that to other men as much as women. Can't tell you how many times I've given a presentation and had a man start talking over me and "correcting" my own material in an attempt to discredit me, or because they're offended, or have an ego when a woman, and young one at that, is trying to teach them something. I have been berated by men however, in the military. Higher the rank, usually the higher the temper.
