Consulting

Few weeks out of consulting: realized today one of my analysts (in role for 5 years) does not know pivot tables. Fun times

I design extraordinarily complex worksheets including written VBA code to include scouring the web and updating VBA code from one workbook to another. I never use pivot tables. Does that make me inept? Personally I think they are overhyped inflexible trash that makes a moderately skilled analyst feel like they can do real complex analysis.

What a bunch of egotistical spreadsheet crunchers on here... big freakin’ deal, teach him. Sometimes we expect way too much from Analysts. Plus, I can’t build complex pivot tables and don’t care for them frankly.... I was an industry hire and add value in my expertise, not in my ability to manipulate data tables or format ppt slides 🙄

My intern today didn’t know how to hide columns lol. He would shrink the column size so you barely see them

We're all assuming that different jobs require the same skillset...and that making a pivot table is a skill. 🙄 It's wild that some of y'all think knowing an Excel function makes you so much smarter than folks in industry.

Excel on a Mac? GTFO. Also, I don’t like pivot tables but I know how to use them

Honestly , I have worked with technical resources in industry who are far smarter than consultants.. knowing Excel does not mean you are smarter than than a person in industry.

@d4 I hope he isn’t hiding columns either (vs group)

@Slalom think it through. If basics aren’t there think about how little leverage you’re likely to get from that person vs what you’d expect to get out of an “analyst” role.

Temp check, please. What should I be looking for as earnings package (base + bonus + equity/benefits) for a VP level role (it’s a hybrid Marketing/strategy Head of marketing-type role)? I have a history of chronically under negotiating and don’t want to do that this time. (For context: Series A funded global start up, executive level role). Thanks in advance!

I am in strategy consulting now, and am looking to switch to Data & Analytics role in the industry. Have a background in chemistry (which isn’t massively statistics related) and have 4 YoE in strategy consulting. What are the level of coding skills required (is knowing Python / SQL already more or less okay or do I need more specific languages eg Scala), and is doing MS in DS recommended? Think I need to further develop my coding skills too :/
