One Club calls on industry to obey the law

likefunny

My internship was paid. As in I had to pay money for the required college credits.

school gets free money. employer gets a free worker. it’s robbery

like

Miami Ad School has their students pay them. Then, has ad agencies pay them to get access to their students. But, the students get nothing for doing the actual work. Ironically, if they applied for an internship outside of the school, they’d get paid. This is such a racket. The first time I heard this I was shocked. I feel like a class action lawsuit would be valid.

How about free submission for students on their awards?

About time. Though I can’t complain. My internship was paid 23 years ago. It was a kinder, friendlier industry then.

Are there any ad agencies that don’t pay their interns? Normally it’s just the irrelevant digital marketing type places that don’t pay.

like

@CW2 I was thinking the same. My school wouldn’t let a shop bring us on as interns if it wasn’t paid

18 years ago I was an unpaid intern at an agency. I worked 60+ hours a week. Busted my ass to get hired at the end of it. Should I have been paid? Yes. Did I complain? No. Could I have? Not if I wanted to work and eventually get hired. Should I have? Yes, because then I might not be in this godforsaken business. :-p

18 years ago life was a lot less expensive to live. the cost of survival has surpassed inflation and will only continue to. Working for free to get “experience” isn’t logical anymore

Internships should be nixed altogether. They’re systemic barriers that only benefit people who can afford to be placed by a university. These people can afford to go 2–4 years without any income to attend the university in the first place.

I just started working at a Digital Strategy Consulting Boutique firm but the company is in Europe and we work in another language entirely. I started off as an intern (8 months) and now I am working full time. I am trying to learn the language to be more interactive with the clients and in the meetings but it's super difficult. Should I switch or learn the language and stay here for another year? It's a small firm and the pay is not that great but good for beginners in the country. Any advice?

Potentially a dumb question, but for the employment history part of the application, should you include internships? If so, do you annualize the amount of your internship pay? I’ve included them in my resume but feels a little weird to put them at the same level as my first full time job.

How soon is too soon to be preparing for a lateral move? I did my 1L summer internship in a niche area of securities law, loved it, took courses on it. I decided I wanted to explore securities law a little more broadly and not to pigeonhole myself. The firm I’m at is great—doing sec lit—but has zero work in that niche area that I liked. I’m afraid that I am passing on a passion, and I don’t want to get too “old” for a firm to take me on if I have zero experience in a specialty area. Advice? Thx

Hi everyone, I have two questions: - In the US, how much importance is placed by MBB on GPA after 3-4 years of work experience? In case of a low GPA, does this weigh a lot or after a while do they almost only weigh work experience? What about for tier 2? - Is it feasible for MBB (or Tier 2)to be hired in the US directly from Europe, or is it better to transfer internally to your own company? Thanks to all
