This resonates with me SO hard. I have struggled with this for years, especially after meeting my wife, who works in public health. She has a calling. She loves what she does. Me, I get paid, and that enables me to do the stuff I love, like ski and vacation and play golf, etc..

Thank you for posting this. I’m saving this to my phone.

I do this to make money, I volunteer to make a contribution to society.

None of our contributions have meaning we’re just keeping this industrialized society machine going. I admire people pushing the limits of technology though.

I think if you’re not doing strategy work, you’re not usually making a huge difference, just a wheel in a machine spinning in a direction you don’t have control over. And even if you’re doing strategy work, you’re still at the mercy of what a client is actually willing to do, which is usually motivated by money.

That being said, sometimes the “machine” as a whole is going in a good direction and you can find joy in that. Like Pharma can be both good and bad. In some ways, they make life saving medications and vaccines. In others, they put a burden on the US healthcare system and patients with unfair prices

I used to, but now we have allowed ourselves to compete against the IPPs. Now more than ever it’s a race to the bottom to find cheap labor and nothing else.

No value, any thought leadership becomes commoditized to the maximum offshore rate.

No more differentiators, just a hand in a crowded room with 1000’s of other India Pure Plays yelling “Me too! Me too!”

North America CEO claims that Infosys is our biggest rival. Infosys success was based on one key strategy, Cheap Educated Workforce. To defeat your rival you must think like your rival, to think like your rival you must act like your rival.

That is now our meaning and value

It is definitely a struggle and you feel you are constantly climbing uphill. Also, like someone posted previously, not everone finds their calling. With that said, I have embraced the Capgemini philosophy to manage my own career.
2 Keys to success:
1. Know what you want. This may take a lot of soul searching and work on your part.
2. Network. Never assume people know what's in your head. Once you decide what direction you want to go, talk to people doing it.
3. Bonus - Persevere! 🙂
Good luck!

We’re hired help to make a company make switch that they don’t really need to do because the CEO needs to make a splash. It’s very rare that you actually make a difference.

Hoping to learn what I can about problem solving and go to industry that does something meaningful.

Personally don’t find purpose in the work I do, however I find a lot of value in intelligent conversations & shared experiences with the people I work with from peer to partner/MD level. All depends what you’re looking to get out of your job.

Would love for someone working in Accenture Development Partners or something similar to chime in here

I think everyone struggles with this after a certain amount of time in the firms.

Consulting is an industry where your charge out rates go up every year but, for the majority of firms, they end up competing on price which means they are offering more for less. Never made sense to me and makes even less when you start putting estimates together and have partners cutting hours to get down to the price they want to offer.

At the end of the day, the value your going to get is probably less macro than you're expecting. If you're looking for value in your job, it's you servicing others. You helped your client make a business case for a special project or implement a system. You helped your team deliver on time. You helped your partner/practice make its numbers for the year.

Maybe switch to a practice that serves the public sector. Maybe when you get through a project that is undersold and over delivered you'll find meaning in that you helped save the taxpayer some money?

I feel like I’m being targeted at work but I can’t place whether it’s racially motivated or just a mean spirited group. It started with a change in leadership and my new ED removing me from my projects and trying to relegate be to being her secretary. Now I’m being given tasks that we have front staff responsible for. Im also told that I laugh too much. Other colleagues/woc were given feedback that aligned them with being the angry black female so it’s not to far fetched for me to believe.

Interviewing with a PE firm that separates its investment team between “Origination” and “Investment Management”. I.e. Origination team would do the leg work to make the initial investment and the Management team would track performance, lead the process for any follow-on investments, etc. Is it common to see those roles specifically separated? If so, would comp expectations vary greatly between them? (Btw, they said that the management team is very much a deal team, I.e. not PE ops)
