Yup, aim for people early in their career because that’s the stage people are most willing to network. Find something in common first (same college, similar client, etc) to open the conversation, and keep your LinkedIn message extremely simple - 3 sentence max and close by asking to buy coffee or lunch. Good luck, networking takes effort, but pays off in spades even if it’s not immediate

Yep, totally normal. When I was more junior, a senior team member asked me to guest speak at a marketing class with them and I had a bunch of kids from the class reach out to me. (My guess is because I was younger and therefore maybe less intimidating?) It’s definitely easier when you have that kind of in versus messaging a rando. Try to see if you have mutual connections and see if they’ll introduce you - helps it feel more natural and less like you’re cold calling

CONT to talk to them about their job/agency, and then they'll talk to their recruiter about me. Or do the same thing directly with a recruiter. ..is this something people do? how do I word it over LinkedIn message? What do I ask at coffee?

OP what city are you in?

SF!

Media Director 1 has wise advice! As another idea- you could also ask for an “informational interview.” I used to get these requests a lot, sometimes via direct email and sometimes on LinkedIn, and it was easier than coffee because I didn’t have to find time to meet outside the office.

Still doing that today

Potentially a dumb question, but for the employment history part of the application, should you include internships? If so, do you annualize the amount of your internship pay? I’ve included them in my resume but feels a little weird to put them at the same level as my first full time job.

So I started at a new role at a known retailer about 2 months ago. I am their first hire in this role, as I have more than 5 years of relevant experience leading initiatives and optimizing process across departments. I already feel myself not wanting to be here long, but I'm putting pressure on myself to not be a quitter. Would you stick it out or start looking?

So I’m finishing up “The McKinsey Way”, and this guy is going on about all his recommendations for surviving at McKinsey, one of these recommendations being travel items.
