Finishing up my first year of big law, thinking of starting my own practice while I work at my current position. Thinking that in a few months, I’ll concretely work solely for my own practice full-time. How difficult is it to gain clients (mainly PI and civil lit)? My mentor also offered me to be an off counsel while I’m working at my current job so that I can refer cases for a cut, would there be an ethical issue? FYI my firm does unrelated law to PI and doesn’t forbid doing extra work.

If it wasn't difficult, more people would have their own firms. Assuming you need money to live, then think about how much money you need and where that would come from. Can you make enough as of-counsel to live? How long will the firm allow that arrangement? Is that sufficient time? Do you have enough civil litigation clients right now to generate income to live? Or do you have sufficient savings to live on while starting a firm? Or to fund your PI clients until those cases pay out? To me, these considerations drive when you start a firm not a desire to do so. That said, I wish you luck, and you should find mentors who are doing or who have done what you want to ask for answers and guidance as you go.

Without the bar association meetings where do even seek mentors now?

The level of difficulty varies because it is dependent on many factors, including but not limited to, one’s reputation in the community, one’s personal ability and financial ability to market, and your relationships with other lawyers. For example, your relationship with your mentor is a plus as it appears that he would refer you work.

Is it normal to be threatened to be fired after making mistakes that you had no idea were mistakes in the first place?
I’m a junior litigation associate at a small firm, and the managing partner says things like “you aren’t providing value to the firm” or “you’re being paid to avoid mistakes like these” when I make mistakes due to, what I believe, to be a lack of guidance and instruction. As in, they could be easily avoided with a “please keep in mind X” or something like that. Thoughts?

I've had 7 managers in my 4 years of experience, 3 in one year at my first position (which is why I left) and now 4 at the 2nd company in 3 years. I work at a small, 3 lawyer firm. One of the lawyers is not barred in the state we practice. Because of this, the managing attorney has been having him draft motions and other legal documents and use my name and bar number and having me file them because I will have to appear in court for the matter. Is this normal? I am not provided time to review the materials before I file them so I end up working longer days because I am nervous to file something using my name and bar number.
