Yes. Run!
And even if the firm is solvent, Run. People who would say/do that are not the people you want to be working for!

Red flag. Would really piss me off as well. Bonuses are a large part of attorney comp. Management cannot be so nonchalant about it and think your stupid enough to believe some excuse like that.
Honestly, unless this is a small firm and management has some unique set of facts to explain this action (e.g. the death of a rain maker in a small firm, having to settle a malpractice suit for someone who has already been terminated), this would be a giant red flag. If they break their promises once, they will do it again. At the very least, partners should themselves take a salary cut to at least issue some bonuses.
Also an “opportunity” for bigger bonuses next year doesn’t even mean anything, even if you could trust them it’s no guarantee. They’ll probably just keep moving the goal posts. Unfortunately I’d start looking, definitely think you’re right to worry about solvency issues if they’d take a step like this, which will obviously look bad/have consequences.
Which ranking firm?

oof. that’s so awful. you should be worried. this happened to me at the end of my first year, and i left almost at the end of my second year because i knew there wouldn’t be a bonus again.
Get the hell out
Could you DM the firm? I have openings for juniors 😆

Lol what the fuck. Run.

oof! I don't blame you!
I had a feeling something bad was coming down the pike when apple's chief privacy officer's resignation was leaked!
Leave now. Sounds an awful lot like the partners are breaching promises of compensation for which their associates performed.
